I currently have some HD soft lowers on my road king but I have been thinking about getting a set of hard lowers for the winter. Has anybody used both and is there a difference in wind protection? The soft lowers I have work ok but really only block the wind off of my feet and ankles, do the hard fairings come up higher to keep some of the wind off your knees? I don't wear chaps so I really just want these for more wind protection in the cold from the ankles up and then they will come when the weather warms up again.
I put hard lowers on my Road King a few years ago, just to keep my feet dry in the winter. There is definitely better weather protection for your lower legs and feet, compared to elephant ears. Neither blocks much wind off your knees.
If you swap out your windshield for a batwing fairing with lower air deflectors, along with hard lowers, you can pretty much eliminate all of the wind, if that's your goal.
I am planning on putting the lowers on my RK also for the same reasons. I tried the soft lowers and the work ok , but after riding a buddys bike with the lower fairings I was sold.

What was the big difference? My soft lowers work ok but I get kind of swirling wind effect with them.

I have been thinking about fairing too for winter but the only thing that get cold on me is my hands because of ape hangers which I don't think a fairing will help anyway, or does it?
no apes are over the top of the batwing. Hard lowers do help with wind but it still gets to the knees. I'll be getting some air wings for the SG over the winter.

Get a pair on insulated jeans for the cold days .I hate putting chaps on and they are not that comfortable to me.My hard lowers just get in the way of my feet and make me hotter in the afternoon. Elephant ears are easy to put on and off. Living in Florida does have it's benefits.

I ride to work just about everyday and sweat my butt off in insulated jeans, I'm not into chaps either. I was looking at the vented ones so I could open them up when it warms up if needed.
I have them on my Ultra and really like them in the cold weather and the rain. However, I have big feet and often kick them when going from the highway pegs to the floorboards.
