I had to helicoil one a few years ago. It will work fine. Cheap too.

Derby cover isn't a high torque item anyway and definitely not made of Tin or steel... lol

Think I would prefer to go have the hole welded up, drill and tap for a permanent fix though.

There is plenty of meat there for a helicoil or time-sert.Just remember when you are drilling that these are blind holes and don't drill through.

LOL - I'm done with the back and forth. I came here to help and my fan boy chased me over here to toss some insults because he got his panties in a wad over calling him on some BS in another thread.

My apologies for my part in this.

For the record, I said the primary cover was stamped steel, which was incorrect. Frankly, I've never removed mine or gave it any thought. I have removed my derby cover numerous times, which is made of Titanium. Right?

Gliden, I've used a heli-coil on an '84 E-Glide, it works fine.
Heli-coil, time serts, any inserts come in a variety of lengths.
Should be able to find a kit at auto parts stores, I know NAPA has heli-coils.

Either way should work fine.
Also, be sure you cover up or stuff rags in or around to prevent metal shavings from going somewhere you don't want them to go.
Bring the bolt with you, and they will size you up to what you need.

I just prefer the Time-serts due to the fact I have had too many helicoils come out with the bolt next time it was removed. Time-Serts are steel, the are solid and they will not come out or strip if bolt isn't over tightened. You fix it once and forget it. I have been in the automotive repair business for over 30 years, and if I was charging for a repair and had to warranty it I wanted to make sure it would last. Since I found Time-serts some 10 plus years ago a Helicoil will never, ever be used by me. I will pay more for the Time-Sert quality.

And yes...all the info you need is in the Time-Sert kit, and all the tools required except the drill motor and the tap wrench. The drill, the tap and the insert tool are all in the handy kit box. You will not be disappointed if you use them.

And no, I don't own stock in Time-Sert, I just believe in them!!

This is what us tool/diemakers use they are called recoils they lock in place after installation by driving down the little pins, the pins cut through the threads, that way the inserts do not back out, I have used these for over 30 years and you can install and remove screws dozens of times and the insert will not back out, similar to serts except they lock in place. You can buy them at MSCDIRECT.COM industrial supply store, next day delivery. They come in different sizes and lengths. good luck with your project. Depending on size $2.00 to $4.00 each.
