Just picked up a 2011 Street Glide and the fuel gauge is very inaccurate. I filled up the tank and about 60-70 miles later guage is at the halfway mark. I did get to about 165 miles before I filled up again, and ended up putting in 4.5 gallons to get back to full. I don't think the bike is burning fuel at an abnormal pace, based on how much I put in against how many miles ridden. But the gauge is just so inaccurate, especially compared to my Road King I had before this bike. Has anyone else experienced, or heard of this issue with the gauge?
Harley's attempt at a accurate fuel gauge is about like a weather forecast......All over the map.
Watch your DTE number and miles ridden. You'll get a feel for how far you can consistently go on a tank. Here's something else I do. When your tank gets low, put a one gallon can of gas in the bags and take it out on a local hop around (stay off the busy roads). I note when the low fuel light illuminates and then ride it till it runs out. Then I know how far I can go if I unexpectedly get in situation and really need to push it.
This question comes up across the full range of Harleys frequently! If and when you change bikes the next one will tell you a different story, as you have already discovered, it's been a fact of life since the reserve tap was invented. The simplest thing to do is to learn what your bike is telling you, which should take no more than three tanks full IMHO.
