Default 2001 Road King

Hi gang. I'm new to the Harley world, and new to motorcycles since it's been 30+ years since I've owned one. I'm interested in getting a pre-owned Road King. There's a local guy selling a nice looking 2001 RKC for $7250 dressed out just like I want; black, white walls, .... My concern is that this bike is fuel injected and has the Magnetti Morelli EFI system. I've heard these can give you trouble. Am I better off looking for an '02 or newer bike or not worry about the fuel system?
Thx
Griff

02 is one of the best years also adds a stronger swing arm.pre 02 had some swing arm breaking problems. buddy here just found an 05 ultra 14,000 miles for 10,000 keep looking, unless u can get the price down and want to learn m&m injection.01 is getting to the age were rubber and wiring will start deterating.

Welcome to the Forums

I stay away from the MM EFI*- and in my opinion the EFI pre 2007 ( o2 sensors) is not worth having.

I like carbs...but the efi on my 09 is flawless.

As above, suggest you take time to shop around.

kbb.com is good for valuations.

best deals are cash in hand- spend within your budget.

Mike

* Kudos for you for knowing that the 01 has the MM efi, you've done more research than many new members

I've been lucky (I think most owners were,) but both my '98 MM injected Ultra (65,000 miles in 4 years,) and my current '00 Road Glide (just past 147,000 miles and counting,) have been near perfect for me. The Road Glide lost a throttle position sensor last year on a road trip and still got me home where I replaced it from an extra throttle body I was smart enough to buy a couple of years back.

Both motors were hopped up a little, the '98 with flowed heads, compression and cam and all I used to adjust the fuel was a Power Commander. The Road Glide came woth a Stage II download on the Big Bore 95" kit with 203 cams from the factory. So neither bike was over built and neither bike has left me stranded.

(And the bottom ends of the '99 to '02 bikes are the best Harley has produced on the Twin Cam motors.)

Obviously, I'm a fan.

I had a 2001 Road King that I loved. I traded it in on my 2007 Ultra in 2008. The only thing that I ever had done to it was to have the compensator nut tightened. It ran like a clock and I never had a bit of problem with the injector system. It had over 40K miles on it when I traded. Always remember that the negative posts you read are in the minority. Not many will post when things are running great. Good luck, I don't think you will be disappointed if you decide to buy it.

My buddy's '01 Road King has 77,000 miles and his fuel injection hasn't given him any problems. Had a swing arm crack which he was able to get welded but has been a good bike overall.

My 99 Ultra has 110K miles, runs great. M&M is not as bad as some think, it's just primative.

If everything else on the bike checks out-price,upgrades,accessories,maintenance history, type of use and owner,I would say go for it if the only negative is the MM system.
If there are any red flags at all, move on.

my '99 RG had "gremlims" in the MM injection from day 1 that never got sorted. My '00 RK has nearly 80k (I have other bikes) and the MM system still works ok. THE MM system has nearly no repair or parts support anymore. In fact most dealers won't touch it/them. If it is really the bike ya want at the right price and it checks out good ya can take your chances. Me, I would stay away from the MM system nowadays.

Like others have said the downside to the '01 and older fuel injected bikes is the lack of parts, and what's available cost $$$. I bought a fuel filter recently and it was $90.
That being said I dig my injected '00, sweet running bike. It's a challenge, but part of the fun is working on it.
