I didn't expect this. Riding home on a 3 hour journey the traffic slows to a crawl due to an accident. Another lady on a Harley is in front and we are easing up then stop.
Finally no movement for about 45 minutes. Our bikes have been idling during this time, no rear cylinder turn off running just fine. We shut off the bikes due to our legs getting hot. 15-20 minutes later the traffic moves, we try to start em up and, they crank slowly, and compression release but no starting.
We wheel them off the freeway. How funny this must look. 2 bikers on a cold evening riding Harleys are broken down from just sitting there.
Anyway I call my wife, stuck in the same traffic 4 miles back, The lady biker calls husband and he is an hour away. We decide to just wait for my wife, after about 20 min we try the bikes again and they both start up.
I guess they just got too hot, then when the motor was shut off they were not going to start yet. I would have expected this in hotter months, but no when it was 55 degrees outside. well, next time I shut'er down sooner than later.
All in all, actually it was sorta fun, something different and it is always fun to meet another rider on the road.
The same thing happened to me in October driving thru Houston. My Wards fans probably saved my engine but bike still got pretty hot. My right leg was also well done.

You said you idled your bike for 45 minutes without moving? Did you turn it off at all during that time, or you actually idled for 45 minutes straight?
Both of our bikes idled for 45 minutes before turning them off. I was listening to the radio, and since I have a black bike I didn't really want the lights off either. I thought any minute now we will be going. Lessoned learned.
I thought maybe I was going to have a dead battery also from trying to start it, as it was turning slowly and real hard. Since I have only had a Harley for about 11 weeks I didn't think it would overheat as cool as it was. I was wrong.
Since I have posted, I searched and now I have learned how to jump start the bike.
Positive on the big starter cable
Negative on the muffler clamp
jump from a NON Running car.
Ya, me too. This should be available in all 50 states. Recent UC Berkeley survey from 2012 shows it is also safer to lane split.
BTW there is a petition to sign to request this. I should start another thread and link for it. Not sure if will do any good, but can't cause any harm.

I ams more edumacated now!
OK. Yeah, you really don't want to be idling an air cooled bike for extended periods like that... not good. The cylinders need air rushing past them to keep things cool. I'm surprised it didn't go into heat management mode actually, but I guess the outside air temp prevented that from happening unless that feature has been disabled in your ECM.
