I've only ever removed the footboard. Remember there are large things inside the cover, the alternator and clutch, so the cover won't move very far if you can't disengage it from those. It is hardly difficult to take the footboard off!

I just did this on my dad's 02 Road King. The front floor board has to come off. I tried to just loosen it and move it, but realized it was just easier to take all 3 bolts out of and take it off. I think is a 3/8" allen in the front, 1/2" bolt that goes through the back side of the frame into the floorboard and 1/2" nut and bolt through the floor board at the jiffy stand bracket.

Just replaced my inner primary with a chrome one. Take the footboard off. I also took the shifter, passenger footboard and kickstand off as the manual says. give yourself some room. make sure to replace the gasket. Wasn't bad at all.

yes it is but on a 2005 and lower you have to remove the primary cover to take the jackshaft loose ,, the 2006 and up do not need to remove the primary
