All three HD dealers in my Omaha & Western IA area stopped military discounts...just have their stupid "perk" card where you get one discount after spending a butt-load of ca$h...sux.
Some franchised dealers will give a 10% discount to Vets. Generally, they do not advertise this so you will have to ask for the discount. Some dealers also give their registered, dues paying HOG members 10% off.
my 'local' dealer (renegade hd in alexandria la) used to give 10% to active duty and retired. but because of their lack of training (the salespeople would give 10% to you if you had a va card) they stopped and only give it to active duty now. i used to be of the belief that if i went in every now and again and bought something (an oil filter, small part, etc) that they would have at least some vague recollection of me if i needed some more 'major' help. well, the turnover is so high there that i'm pretty much a new customer to them every time i go in, and with the discontinuation of the discount, i'll avoid them for all but the littlest stuff, or if i absolutely must have it now to get on the road. for oil filters, etc. i buy 4 at a time from pcpain. save $10 or so and have them on hand.
The dealers in my area (and there are a bunch around NY's Capital District) don't give a discount. I've never gotten a military discount at Spitzie's, Brunswick or McDermott's, though I haven't shopped Adirondack HD or Ronnie's in Pittsfield, MA. I haven't gotten the offer of a discount, even when I show them my military ID or shop there IN uniform. I've stopped for repair/mx parts at Spitzie's in uniform (on my way home from work) numerous times, and there's never a discount given.
When I was down in the Outer Banks this summer, Outer Banks Harley-Davidson on the mainland (just before the bridge out to the islands) stated they only do a military discount on Mondays. Of course, I was in there on Friday. Meanwhile Nags Head HD (out ON the OBX) gave a discount earlier that day.
I guess it's totally hit or miss if a dealer will give a military/veteran discount. Ask...worst they can say is no. Unless I desperately need a part so I can ride, I will always order it in from Surdyke or Kutter- they give a better discount anyway.
My dealer use to give the 10% military discount now they have a loyalty card that if you spend something like $250 you get $5 off and the points expire every December 31.
In the Toledo OH area, neither dealer give any veterans discount. Those are Signature HD in Perrysburg and Toledo HD in Sylvania. I don't buy squat from either one. A short ways away, Napoleon HD does give a 10% discount. Just prove it once, and they stick you in the computer, and you don't have to ask again. A little further away, Breece HD in Ottawa OH gives a 10% vet discount, you have to mention it at each purchase. Those are the best people in the business, multi-generation family owned, will do whatever is necessary to make you a satisfied customer. Buy a bike from them, and get a 15% discount on future parts/service/clothes purchases.
