The RK is a great long distance bike, as for exhaust try the Cobra tri flo exhaust I installed it on my 2013 limited and it is nice and quiet for the highway with just enough bark when you get on the gas.
Went from a Heritage to a CVO RK, love my new bike, once moving its very nimble, and very comfortable for long trips. Ear plug wise, Pinlock, the company who make the visors have a new product, which comes with two different tips and seem to be very good. They block out wind noise etc, but you can still hear normal conversation and my intercom. Not cheap though

One of those rare instances where being in the US has its limitations. Not available to us here.
I wire ear plugs for a lot of rides but my 3/4 Shoei RJ platinum has done the best as far as being quiet....it is the quietest and met comfortable helmet I have owned.
Well, I'll be, BAKA on a RK. One thing guys have a bit of a hard time getting accustomed to is floorboards instead of pegs. Have you ridden a bike for any kind of distance with boards?

I have mini boards on my Sporty. I've ridden touring bikes and Softails with boards ann Ny buddy's Yamaha. The only thing I'd have to do is get rid of the heel shifter.
I Rode several bikes before getting my14 SGS. A Vic cross country,Indian Chieftain and a RoadKing, almost got the king, but the Streetglide won. I hate to say it but the radio is what made the difference. By the way the radio has been trouble free and works well. I do still ride the wife's sporty occasionally for the feeling. We are planning a trip next summer two up through Tennessee. one thing though aren't the 14 up 103 engines called "HO" I believe cams and a few other internal changes were made.

I'd love to have a Sportster to go with my Ultra. The Road King will complement your Sportster well..
