Default Tick, Tap, Gone! (Update)

Went after the ticking and tapping often heard coming from the front rocker arms. I opened it up put some shims to reduce the rocker arm end play, and it solved the problem. Its been 9k miles and with the cold weather the tapping is back until the oil temps are around 210 Degrees F. I am going to open it back up and measure everything and maybe reshim. The front cylinder wears twice as fast as the rear this must be due to the front cylinder running cooler having more direct air cooling. Its a 2009 RK with 255 cams stock pushrods. Once I check everything Ill update, here is the link to the other thread.

P.S. HARLEY PLEASE FORGE THE ROCKER ARMS AND ROCKER ARM SUPPORT PLATES!!! Or something.

I'm wondering if mine has the same issue. Mine will get louder depending on how hot the engine is getting which in the summer time around here is damn hot. Bike sounds great with the highs in the mid 60's.

Well got everything opened up and measured and please to say the shims are holding up well. In 9K miles went from .004 to .005 end play between the rocker arms and support plat, so its worth doing. I am still wondering what that sound is thought when the engine is cold. It seems like the support plate is warped on the intake side. I also noticed some uneven scaring on the rocker arm bearing on the same side and there is more play between the rocker arm bushing and shaft then there is on the exhaust side. I drained 1 quart of the Valvoline 20w50 MC oil I am running now and added a quart of 10w40. The top end sounds great and I can tell the oil is getting to the top much faster with this blend. I am going to install the forged support plates and install new bushings in the rocker arms I think this will take care of the sloppy valvetrain sound when cold.

I replaced by rocker arms with S&S rocker arms and pins and also installed a Zippers dual piston cam chain Tensiors with Axtel bypass system.

All of my top end noise is gone. I think the Axtel bypass is doing the most but I the whole combination is what got me there.

I think this is where the Axtel bypass does the most work. It stops the oil from frothing. When the oil gets hot and starts frothing you won't get enough up to the top end.

Zippers sells the upgraded cam tensioners and you can get them with Axtel Bypass
http://www.zippersperformance.com/ne...ensioners.html

The S&S rocker arms and Pins I got from JP cycle, I think these are them:

http://www.jpcycles.com/product/534-598
http://www.jpcycles.com/product/534-597
Reason I went went these is they have a 3/4" bushing, longer than the stock rocker arms

I put these all in after I did the 107 upgrade. Long story but had a oil leak around the base cylinder so since I was tearing it down I installed these and it took allmost all of the top end noise out, big reduction.
