Default Charger Question/Issue

Good Morning;

My wife got me the charger pictured below for Christmas. It is supposed to be a maintenance charger. When I plug it in its says to connect cables, I as you can see have the pigtail hooked to the battery for easy access. It is hooked to the battery properly red to positive side black to negative. When I hook cables to cables from pigtail red/red black/black the display reads warning cables reversed. If I switch red/black black/red then it begins to charge. I know this can't be right, can it??? I obviously did not leave them hooked up wrong for more than a few seconds just to see what happens. The connection between the pigtails only plugs in one way and if correct on battery I just don't understand what is going on.

Anybody have any insight?

Is that the pigtail (battery-side) that came w/your new charger-maintainer? Looks older and might be wired different than your new Sears unit. If you new charger came with a pigtail...swap it out. Other than that - you got it correct. If it still doesn't work right...might need to take it back...could be faulty.

Thank You Iceman

The pigtail is older and the charger did not come with one. So you would say reverse the clamps?

I returned the original one she got me yesterday as I thought there was something wrong with the charger and this is another so I am pretty sure it is not the charger...

Thank You

When it comes out of the battey the female is positive and the extension positive should have the male plug. It's easy enough to follow the wires to the end and see that.
If your unsure just hook it up the way it charges. The unit knows the correct polarity.

Like others have said, the charger will recognize the polarity.

Have you followed the leads back to the gator claws just to make sure the colored sleeves are on the correct side.

I have a maintainer that has opposite polarity than the bike, so I would think that is the issue. Not a biggie as long as you have identified the issue and reacted to it correctly.
