So I'm trying to save as much as possible. I looked at a pair of pioneer 5 1/4" 2 way speakers at my local audio shop. They are rated at 4 Ohms and 250 watt max. I grabbed them since they seemed like a good deal.
My question is will they be ok to use in the faring being that they are not Marine Grade?
The bike is a 2000 EG Classic
If you live where there is no rain and cover them when you wash your bike maybe a year or so. They end up cost more than a good pair when you add the cost of buying the twice.
In the pro audio/ concert sound world we have been doing this for years...you get the young bands who think that throwing beer around is cool.
however, OP your amp wants to see a 2 ohm load- a 4 ohm load may damage the amp over time.
option to add 4 ohm speakers to fairing lowers ( or saddlebag lids) and wired in parallel with the fairing speakers would total 2 ohms.
the "250W" rating is how much electricity that speaker can absorb from your amp without bursting into flames- there is not relation to how much sound is produced
the key specification is "sensitivity" which is how much sound is produced for each watt the amp gives the speaker.
ooops! thanks- I missed that he had an older model!
so if the amp is 4 ohm- hey presto, off you go.
if it is 8 ohm, you can add a 2nd set of speakers but wire in series to equal an 8 ohm load.

all depends if your using an amp or what ohm rating your head unit is,not sure on years but older bikes used an 8 ohm head unit, newwer
use a 2 ohm.IF yours is 8 ohm head unit 4 ohm speakers will kill your head unit,

That! Without an amp your stock head unit wants 8 ohms. Not many 8 ohm speakers out there any more. The whole "marine" thing is next to meaningless with modern speaker materials.

less ohms will pass more current (don't use 1ohm speakers with a 2ohm system). More ohms will pass less current and make less sound (4ohm won't harm a 2ohm system but won't be as loud). Look up ohms law to see for yourself. Keep in mind that coil inductance and reactance will vary the current passed relative to the sound frequency going to the speaker.
