Real 120 or speedo 120? Huge difference. 100+ on my Guzzi is fine, stable, planted. On my FLHTCU, front end gets light above 100. When I re-cam, it will be a torque cam and I'll probably loose 10MPH from theoretical top speed. Harley's and Guzzi's are closer to related to a ditch pump than a racing engine.
For a speed day, I suggest people attend a track day to check top speed and handling abilities. Testing rider abilities more than bike capabilities.
Had the 01 FXSTS up to 104.
Had the 09 X-bones up to 110
Two days ago I had the 17 TriGlide to about 94. It was on a new stretch of GA 400 and the rain grooves were causing me to drift so I backed off. Not much of a speed demon and I used to be. More fun to read about other guys.
I did it once on my stock 2011 RGU. Did it in the middle of nowhere with no traffic around. Stopped when the needle got to 120 because I didn't want to damage the gauge (I don't think it would have, but you never know)
I hit about 55 or so according to the speedometer on my '64 HD Servi-car with 45" flathead and 3 speed and thought it was going to blow up. I've hit 100 on my '14 Limited and it was still pulling. I figured that was fast enough and backed off.
I ride Highway 50 across Nevada once a year or so I have a 08 ultra with a 103 stage 2 and comeing out of Austin there is a streach of road you can see ten mile with now traffic I have hit 120 a few time on that road
I got a 2012 Ultra with a stage IV kit tunes to 112hp/105ft/lbs torque -got up to 215klm per hour once (129mph) flat out in 5thgear , as I slowed down ,got in to a death wobble(hi speed weave , not tank slapper) ,tried to accelerate out of it ,but made it worse ,finally almost sat on the tank to get more weight on front end and used the gears .Tried it again and did the same at 190kph (114mph) .Bike was almost new at the time with only 2500miles on it so went back to the dealer to discuss - They went to Harley who's comment was Harley are built to comply with the speed limits set down by the Government , and are not built for high speed (why do they push Screaming Eagle race products I asked !) I changes the Front fork cartridges with SE premium ride units also replaced the rear air shocks once again with the SE premium ride units also replaced the standard tall windscreen with the HD 8 inch tinted unit . From my research and talking with others a lot of riders having Ultra's ,Street Glides and Road Kings , many have experienced same kind of handling problems as mine - Road Glides seem more stable at hi speed because of the frame mounted fairing. Rushmore Project were aware of these problems and fitted wider diameter forks after 2014 .Bike is more stable now , but I will not push over 110mph.
Likely cause of wobble are
*Front end becoming light due to fairing and leg warmers (lower fairings)
*Weight and torque transfer compressing (weak) air shocks
*Torque steer though rubber mounted swing arm /slight offset between front and rear wheels
*Handlebar mounted fairings are never good at hi speed
Hope no other riders experience the near death experience I encountered trying to find out if the Ultra could crack125mph !!
Got 110 out of my 96" King, bars picked up some wobble at around 107, It felt like it would have made 120mph if I stayed in it using 5th.
This is a Speedo that is dead on calibrated with my PV. SE A/C. Slip Ons. PV Tuner, 48H Cams. and catless header.
If my speedo was still off 120 would have been buried.
I'm going with another run minus tour pak and windshield. I want to be leathered up with my full face as well. Last run was t-shirt, vans, and a beanie helmet. I'll get that 120 handled and be done with it, 100 is all I need for short burst to get caught back or go around a truck. I'm cool with rolling 75-80 on the freeway.
Ive hit 126 in 5th, and 120 in 4th. and was still pulling like freight train, but I was in I-5 traffic between Tacoma and Seattle both times so
S&S 110 kit with head work
HPI intake
PM mass flow air cleaner
Bassani Road Rage pipe
Choosing the right time and place would be wise! Riding at 100mph on a German autobahn requires eyes in the back of your head, for fear of getting in the way of something much faster.........
From being stationed in Germany for many years and the Autobahn.......there are short stretches of high speed between.......Staus.
Having said that, my 2015 RK could easily do 120 in my opinion. Have I ever tempted fate????? HELL NO!!. But I have gripped on it to clear traffic, pass trucks, etc and it jumped to a 100 very fast, very smoothly, with a lot of twist left.
Quite honestly in my over 60 years of riding, this thing is a beast. I also realize that a lot of people are speed freaks, and I say GO FOR IT, but not for me. Anymore.
2021 Road Glide Standard 107ci with TBR 2 into 1 shorty, K&N High Flow air filter, RWD shocks, and Power Vision Tuner PV-3B with rev and speed limiters raised...120MPH is no problem! There is a stretch I ride almost everyday to and from work that I get that speed without even trying.
