Default Saddlebag conversion 2001 Road King Classic

A friend of mine just bought a 2001 Road King Classic. I think its a "Classic" because it has the hard leather saddlebags. He wants to convert over to hard saddlebags. It doesn't look hard to do but I was wondering if anyone has done this and if so, do you have a parts list. I did some research and believe the color of his bike for that year was Luxury Rich Red. I didn't see any other red options in the color availability for that year, if I'm wrong let me know. I have a 2008 Street Glide and if I'm not mistaken, the mounting hardware more my year bike should be the same. Again, if I'm mistaken, please let me know. I looked in the 2014 parts and accessories book and can't even find hard saddlebags for his year bike. The only ones I see are for the new 2014/15 touring bikes and they are stretched. He'd like to just order them direct from HD color matched but I can't even find that color in the book. any help would be greatly appreciated...

No parts other than the saddlebags needed.......they should bolt right up, possibly a little adjustment to the brackets but all you should need is a 1/2" wrench (maybe 7/16, haven't done it for a while).

Easy Peasy!!

As said above.....Ebay. That's where I bought my first set of hard bags for my RKC. If he can't find the correct color, he can buy pretty much any color and have them painted. Just food for thought. Also said, just bracket adjustments are needed. They'll pop right on! Good luck!!

I don't have an RKC, but bought secondhand hard bags for my bike on Ebay. Getting them in the right colour will be a challenge I reckon, so I didn't even try, just got a great price then repainted mine. Also try an ad in the Classifieds here on HDF, you may get lucky!

They mount the same way from about 1994 to 2012.
No special items needed.
Same two attachment points on wall of bag (2) and same shos on the bottom that sits on rail.
I have provided a link so you can research and observe attachment..
Sometimes the two attachment points on wall portion will require adjustment at frame attachment point (loosen bolt and tighten again) no big deal.
For color confirmation look under gas tank edge or front fender for sticker that has color labeled in easy to read label/sticker.
It would seem simpler to obtain some used bags with all required hardware and have a shop color match.
He might even get lucky on ebay and find a nice used set although the pin stripes may not match the tank.
Looks like direct order is over $1,500
Are you familiar with Ronnies Harley Davidson parts finder?
Looks like there was Luxury Rich Red available for the regular Road king but it came with stripes. He needs to look at what color stripes he has on the gas tank.
It would look kinda cheap if the stripes were a different color.
Copy and paste from Ronnies:
SADDLEBAG ASSY. W/ (LUXURY RICH RED W/ RED AND SILVER STRIPE)
or
SADDLEBAG ASSY. W/ (LUXURY RICH RED & BLACK W/ RED AND SILVER STRIPE)

I bought some less expensive bags from ride on . Save your money and put it toward hd bags.you can get locks keyed to match your locks.hd charges for each part make sure you get it assembled not in parts.no what you are getting I made so many extra trips to make it look right.i paid 1500 and got a 20 percent discount but they look good
