My 12 OM says theres a lifting strap on the battery but I havent looked yet. Suggestion before reinstalling the battery again is put a larger tie strap around the battery and reinstall the battery with the tie strap left on it, so in the future you just grab the tie wrap.
Thanks guys.. old leather strap two holes bolt right to battery terminals, lift right out. This place is great...
I like this idea! But it was a few days late. I replaced my battery on Saturday and the strap was underneath the battery (I thought it was missing.) So I had to get it out by palming it like a basketball (fortunately I have big hands) and lifting it with my fingertips until it was high enough to get the fingers of my other hand underneath it. It took a couple tries.
I wish I was as smart as you guys!! (Except for the guy that said to hook wires to the terminals. That could be a shocking experience.)
put a $100 bill in a sammich bag under the battery and when you need to remove it tell your wife she can keep the money. It'll be out in a sec and you'll have a few minutes privacy to reinstall the new one.
I just changed my battery last weekend and had the same issue. Took a while to be able to get a grip on the battery to get it out but once I went around to the other side of the bike from where I was standing I got it. And I put the strap back where it is supposed to be this time as whoever took the battery out last (it was the original battery) didn't make use of the strap.

If i let my wife do it i would need a new battery lol
The other thing i did on my 07 rg is i cut a length off the end of a tiedown strap and laid it in the box and just folded it over after installing the battery. Remember that the battery sits on a rubber pad that a tie wrap or strap will embed in the rubber pad and not raise the top of the battery to be a cause of hitting the bottom of the seat.

I took my battery out last night, I need a new one. There's no rubber pad. Did '03s have one?
Heres my update. I changed the battery in my 12 CVO, it had a lifting strap under the battery, I saw it in my parts book, the battery came out with 1 finger. I dont see why that strap couldnt be installed on any model. Part # 66051-08
