Default do I have a problem?

first off new to the touring class, been on a lowrider for the last 6 years, wife decided we should move up. Recently purchased a new to us 2008 ultra glide. I purchased a light left side lay down salvage bike, mainly cause we wanted a rider and replacing parts is not a big deal to me. anyway long story short, when I went to look at it I asked to hear run, seller put the booster box to it and it started right up (was in a non heated building) so agree to purchase after looking over damage and hearing run/go thru gears

flash forward, get it home, know the battery is dead, so slap it on charger, wont take enough charge ok battery is bad. haven't been in to get a new battery yet, wife wanted to hear it run so I got the cables out and hooked up to one of the cars, think my cables are junk) anyway powers up, barely cranks, the more I crank (or try) the more it pulls down the car im using to jump. Do I have an issue with bike or does it take that much juice to turn this big thing over? could the starter be dragging that much? Any help would be great

mind you the car in use was my little Suzuki so it may not have have had quite the *** to do the job, plus cables might not be the best. also when he started he grounded to bike and put positive to the starter Safe?

One thing to remember, NEVER EVER leave the engine running on the car if you're jump charging a motorcycle use the battery only. The charging system can't handle the big amperage of auto systems. You likely have damaged the stator, regulator and possibly the starter from your description of events.

Id say go get a battery and then check out the charging system after the new battery . Tell the wife to hold on a few minutes cause it will save you aggravation and money later. Do it right the first time and you wont regret it later.

did you hook positive to top of starter and ground to frame? If you held the starter for more than 5 seconds, probably **** in your mess kit and now have a lot of stuff to replace.

Welcome to the touring section! Go get a battery. NOT from the dealer. Do a search on here for Battery. You can order the same battery from a number of places for 99 bucks. If you have advance auto nearby, go online and order it to pickup in store using the coupon TRT30 and you'll get 30% off.

Yes, it takes quite a bit to crank a 96CI engine especially in cold weather. between your cables, the dead battery and whatever condition the battery cables are in, that's a lot of resistance. Is going straight to the starter safe? *shrug* be careful.

While you're replacing the battery, inspect and clean both ends of both cables. You can have all kinds of issues from marginal battery connections.

Happy Motoring!

A known good battery is a must before doing any charging system diagnostics. Only then will you know what damage has been done. And yes, hooking cables to starter and frame is fine and easier than getting access to battery.

to add I didn't crank on battery, bike would turn over 1-2 times I'd stop and let it take a bit more charge since it was a very weak crank still doing damage? and what damage should I look for? I did try to jump directly from a car battery I had sitting in the garage but im not sure of its charge condition

There's a few things you can ohm out to check without power but this is the best advice and will get everything pumping, talking and handshaking thats needed to start.

........... check the continuity of the jump cables from clamp-to-clamp. There should be close to zero ohms as measured on a VOM. Any electrical resistance in the cables will result in a voltage drop to the starter and you only have 12vdc to play with.
