Default Question aboout changing fork oil.

My bike is spending the winter at my Indy's shop. One of the things being done is the 20,000 mile service which includes changing the fork oil.

The told me that they have to disassemble the tubes because I have Progressive Mono Tubes (-1) installed.

Does this sound correct to you guys?

Any one who is going to tell me to get a service manual and do it myself should please take this opportunity to F*** off and die.

Thanks

If you have monotubes, the fork oil is there only to lube the parts, I'd doubt you'd need to change it.

Don't let him do it.....

There is a little oil in the tube for lubrication of the sliders, but the monotubes are self contained.

This leads me to believe that your indy might not be all that good, if he doesn't know this.

I wonder if you know what you actually have. Progressive makes both drop in springs, and monotubes. Springs would require fork oil changes.

I thought that for the stock FLH forks the maintenance interval is 50k not 20k. That's what the book said for my '12 Ultra Classic

Yes, but many change it earlier and like the results. But regardless, if he has monotubes it's moot.

According to the Progressive web site videos, the monotubes get oil but just for spring lubrication. There are springs and a gas charged sealed cartridge. The original equipment has a dampner that uses the oil to cause resistance in the dampners and controls the rate of compression.

Yes, I know what I have and they are Monotubes.

I also called Progressive and verified what some of you have said...

"Monotubes utilize sealed, maintenance free cartridge and the only thing that oil does is lubricate the spring. The fork oil never needs to be changed"

I called my Indy who apologized for the mix up and made it right.

Case solved with the forums help...

Thanks

Sorry, I didn't mean to impugn your intelligence, I was just trying to be sure everyone is super clear as to what is in the bike.

Glad you got it squared away...
