Gilbert Roadking... You should post a picture of your current exhaust system so we could help you determine your current setup. You may already have a nice set of aftermarket mufflers on the bike, and all you need is a set of headers to give you the results your looking for.
You bet - that's a great idea. On the road right now, get back Thursday and will post a pic.
I haven't read all of the responses, but what I did was change only the header and kept the stock mufflers on my 2012. I think it sounds good...better than the stock setup but not too loud.
If you are completely satisfied with your Road King right now, and looking for just a little more bark & rumble from your pipes, just go with a different set of "slip on" pipes. Don't worry about adding fuel management, true duals, headers, air cleaners & all that other stuff right now. You can learn all about that other stuff as you frequent here. Sound is subjective, what you like might be different from what others like. Like some have said here, go down to a dealer on a weekend or a bike night, see what others are running on their tour bikes & listen. Most people on here run Vance & Hines, Rinehart, CFR, Jackpot & Rush Big Louies. I received a lot of compliments on how my Road King sounded with Big Louie's. They are all simple to install, take you thirty minutes.

Thanks everyone for great ideas! I do want to change the sound. If I had mentioned that I wanted to get rid of the catalytic converter that was simply because I thought I had to in order to get a better sound. Is there any real value in removing it or leaving it?
Is the only way to get rid of the catalytic converter to change the header pipes or can it be removed from the existing system?
It can be removed.. Cut the pipe open, remove all the guys, weld it back, there's a company out there that sells stock decated headers for like 350 I think or u can swap yours in and it's 280ish..there was a post about it recently
