My question is really - I want to remove and replace the stock exhausts that came with my road king 2012. They sound fine, but I want a different sound - a bit louder.
This question is not about what brand to buy, but more along the lines of exactly what I need to buy? Do I just replace the pipes or do I have to replace everything from the heads back?
Is this something I can do or does someone need to do this?
If I can do, then YOU can do it. Seriously.
Just replace the mufflers. You'll need a muffler sealant and a torque wrench.
When removing the mufflers, don't twist them from side-to-side; rather, rotate them (you don't want to enlarge the openings).

Remove and keep store your stock head pipe (laws may change or you may decide to reinstall them, whatever the reason).
Go to Ebay and buy a stock, de-catted head pipe for $125/shipped, from bobvic2 (where I got mine)!
It can be removed.. Cut the pipe open, remove all the guys, weld it back, there's a company out there that sells stock decated headers for like 350 I think or u can swap yours in and it's 280ish..there was a post about it recently
Whoever that company is they are ripping people off. You can pull your stock header off and take it to a welding/fab shop and have it done for $40-$60. Plus they're sold on eBay for around $125.
The de-catted head pipes I found on ebay look pretty ratty, not shiny chrome. Is this because there are chrome shields that cover them once they are installed?

Yes. If you're running stock headers, look carefully through your engine and around your heat shields. Yours are likely heat blemished, also.
A lot of good advice. I listened to other baggers until I found the sound I wanted. Ended up being 4inch Rineharts with black tips. I can't wait for the weather to break so I can start wrenching. BTW if I can do it you can do it, so get to wrenching. Lots of you tubes to show about anything you'll want to do.
Bill
I have V&H from headers to mufflers. It is a fairly expensive setup though. You can definitely get a much cheaper setup. Just depends on what you want.
I did all my own install, its not hard to do. Get yourself a service manual, and HD's are pretty straight forward to work on.
