The flag should only be raised between sunrise and sunset. If you leave the flag raised during darkness... it must be illuminated.

How many people illuminate the flag on their car or bike....?

I personally would rather see fewer people display the flag, than to display it improperly...

I find I'm pretty much alone with in thinking though......
Dad is a Vietnam vet (flight engineer on C-130s) and when I installed a flag pole in my front yard he told me not to fly the flag at night unless I had a spotlight on it.

He gets pretty irritated when he sees the flag on clothes, bandanas, etc.

The old school Vet crowd IMHO tends to be hardline about it. I don't really disagree with him.

This post I'm making is CERTAINLY not to be argumentative... more food for thought and discussion.
First, in regards to vehicles, I'm impressed as well about the light on "the beast," I was unaware and had been researching to find just that out recently with no results. I can't seem to find ANYTHING that speaks in detail about lighting a flag displayed on a vehicle. Which I was curious about because EVERYTHING (official) that talks about illumination at night refers specifically to: "The Flag Code states it is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flag staffs in the open." No mention of vehicular flags. And while the presidential limo may have flag illumination, I wonder if ALL dignitary vehicles do? I mention the above section because no issue is ever mentioned over flags on permanent display INSIDE offices, classrooms and the like that are enveloped in darkness at the end of day.
I also find it interesting that while you can find it said that the image of the flag isn't to be imposed on anything "disposable" or of "temporary use", the government itself puts the flag on postage stamps, which are then marked over and ultimately thrown out.

I do agree that I prefer to not see the flag thrown around ***** nilly, backs of trucks and hoods of cars and what not, but properly displayed (in regards to position and height) on vehicles, well, I'm going to keep my flag flying on my tour pack and rely on the overhead lights, other headlights and the faint glow of my tail lights to illuminate it before I take it off daily and unceremoniously lay it in my tour pack or saddle bag.
With ALL due respect to you all who feel the way you do about the flag.
