2012, electra glide, my cruse control won't stay on. i hit the set button , the green light will stay on for a few seconds, any ideas what the problem may be?
a.) the rear brake light switch was recalled for some 09+ models- you can check with your VIN at HD's website.
you can rule this out by just unplugging the rear brake light switch- this may be caused by close placement of an exhaust system/ heat
b.) the owner removed the rightside bar controls without using a shim ( as detailed in the manual for 30 years)...this will break the front brake light switch.
$60 for a replacement- some riders have managed to fix by inserting a small screw in the end or jb weld- search for threads
If you used a shim every time to disassemble the front brake lever and the switch button is not broken off, your master cylinder plunger may not be coming all of the way out to the seat when you let off the brake. The lever should be tight when off and not have play in it. If you can pull the plunger out any it may be the problem. Like Mike says there are other threads on this in HDF.
Most likely cause - one of the brake light switches. The easiest one to check is the rear because you can disconnect the wires to eliminate the switch as the cause.
One more thing to check, which will be a less likely possibility than brake switches, is, check your wiring harness coming from your right switch cluster at the inside of your fairing. I had intermittent cruise failure a while back as well, it would pass the drop down test when bike was off, but wouldn't work while running & would throw a cel. Found that my harness had been rubbing on the fairing support bracket & had rubbed thru the insulation on some wires. Taped em up, cruise worked fine ever since. Must've been shorting to ground causing an error code, which would in turn give me a cel, which I believe auto disables cruise
