Default Cams, Cams, Cams.....

I just did a rebuild of my '00 Roadking due to sucking in an air cleaner mounting bolt into the rear cylinder.... Don't forget the loctite!!!

So previously I had the mag/mor EFI, 95" flat tops, SEH203 Cams, stock headers, and rineharts and I was pretty happy with that... But....

Since I had it apart and needed new pistons and heads cause there wasnt enough space for that pesky bolt.....

I threw in some Wiesco 10.5:1 pistons, matching rings, ported and polished heads with compression releases, SEH258 cams, fullsac performance true dual kit, and CFR slipons....

The result.... My moped will beat me off the line, and I don't like it.... Great top end... also prior to the CFR's I had the Rineharts on and it did have a better lower end...

I was just talking about this with a guy, and he "says" the new 254/255 cams are better than sliced bread for this combo... i cant find anywhere that says these cams fit into my motor, and I cant find a set used either... I have however found a few sets of the SE253 cams.

What do I want? well I don't want to be the slowest off the line, I do go on trips on my bike, so I don't want to be to short on the top end for the freeway... But for the most part, Im just scooting around town or where ever for a little wind therapy....

Anyone have any suggestions of this SE253 cam? I ran the calculator and I know my dynamic compression would be 253/254/255-9.5/10/10.7 for each different cam respectively...

My driving style is moderate when cruising, but when racing from light to light with my buddys... I have the nickname full throttle! I shift at the last possible second so.... Before I buy the 253 cam, and spend the $100 to have it installed in the camplate, I'd like to hear from someone who might already have some experience with this setup... My options thus far are definitely replacing the 258 cam with either the 253 or back to the original 203....

Thank you!

While I'm not a fan of SE cams, I think your problem is more about the tune than the cam?? Not many folks we good at tuning MM systems.

True duals will take away low/mid range torque, however have you had the bike tuned since you rebuilt it? Can make a big difference!

I haven't had it on the dyno yet, but I have found some maps from similar builds. I know every bike is different, but I should be close, I just don't have $300 to dyno it change cams, dyno again, etc... Wanna start with a good combo first. I was told the 258 works best in motors with 100cubes and up... And I know opinions are like... :-) would just like a pool of them to draw from

Get rid of the 258s, a tune isn't going to help them out much, you'll be wasting your $$. If you're dead set on HD cams the 254s or 211s would be your beat bet, the 211s work good in a 95 & should be fairly easy to tune, you should be looking for a cam with an intake close between 42 & 45, that's why the 258s are so lazy, they have an intake close of 52 so low compression until high RPMs.

Thank you! The only reason I'm looking for HD cams is that they are pretty easy to find on eBay for a decent price. I've heard the woods tw555 is a pretty good one, but I'm kinda cam stupid when it comes to what all the specs mean... Is gladly take recommendations on other cams, I am running the stock cam plate and oil pump, with the mechanical adjusters... I did rebuild them with the upgraded replacement shoes, and I know I'm still taking my chances, but I don't have a problem tearing off the cam cover in the winter to inspect them each year. I only put in about 7-8000 miles a season. I was gonna do the whole conversion, but that added another $1000 onto my rebuild. Didn't leave me much gas money for my boat!!!

Solve 2 problems, get a 07 and up stock cam plate with tensioners, and a set of conversion cams from Andrews, since you are replacing cams anyway you would spend maybe $400.00 more , because you could get the bigger oil pump, and hydro tensioners with the new roller chains, which will go 50k easy before inspecting.
The Conversion cams, fit the larger outside cam plate, and small bearings in the 88" lower end.

Andrews 54s would be a good choice also, harder to find used, but can be bought new in the $225-250 range. I've got a friend that might have some Crane 290s for sale, I'll check this weekend.
