Yup, starting the bike takes a lot of juice from the battery.

As a rule of thumb, my retired Harley mechanic once told me that it takes about 40 minutes of riding to replace the charge used to start.

Doubt it. My normal commute (which is typically all I get to ride) is 15-20 minutes. If that rule was true, mine would be deader than a door nail.

Default battery discharge if the jiffy stand on concrete

This used to be true in the really old days. Batteries are now encased in plastic. The old Bakelite or whatever it was used to allow a very small amount of electron flow through the battery case and it would discharge a battery if left on concrete for a very long time, newer batteries don't exhibit the same problem.

Back to the battery, it could simply be that it is coming to the end of its life. If it is the original one then it is around 6 years old. I would take it off the bike to recharge it, then take it to a local auto parts store to get it load tested. If you buy a new replacement charge it fully off the bike before installing it, to give it a good start in life. Buy a battery tender, if you don't have one!

I've had brand new batteries go bad after a month. It just happens...

Only way you'll know for sure is to have the battery tested.
