Cb is a Tool, and like any other tool, is useful in the proper situations.
I use mine when riding with a group. I am either a lead or sweep on most rides. I also use mine when riding long distance on the freeway to get road and traffic conditions from the truckers, along with the best places to eat...(Always trust a trucker to find good food)
I don't use it everyday, but I use it enough to make it worthwhile. Do yourself a favor, get a second helmet. Attach the headset to one, and switch helmets instead of taking the headset off and on all the time.
Also use the cruise control ALOT...but thats because I ride over 100 miles a day on the freeway just to and from work. Cruise is invaluable in that situation.
As for the distance if you want more distance you might want to see a CB shop (truck stop) and have it tuned. As a road captain I use mine all the time. It is not hard to get tuned and it does make a difference. Great tool when on the road.. Enjoy!!!
I have the Ultra. I use the CB when traffic is at a stand still. I use the tourpak everyday. Cruise controll is usedalmost everyday. The wife and I use the intercom and tunes on long rides. My wife loves the comfort of the Ultra. You can not go wrong with the Ultra.
I mostly use the CB if the wife (or someone) is following me in a cage - like when taking the bike in for service. The wife has a handheld in the Jeep that charges through the cigarette lighter. Oh yeah, she also carries it with her in the shopping mall when I am out running other errands. When I return to pick her up I can call her on the CB and find out where she is. Very handy from that perspective.
On the road? I've found it next to useless although it does come in handy for group riding. Ya know, we need to designate an "Official" biker's CB channel (like the truckers have channel 19) that all of us with CBs can monitor while on the road. hat would eliminate all the general garb and let you know when you heard something it is from a fellow/feline (is that the proper term? pro'ly not. I'm sure someone will let me know ) biker. How about 05?
The other really good reason to have a CB is that one time when you break down and you are in the country and you don't get any cell service. In those areas where farming and ranching might be the way of life there is usally somone sitting on a CB that is willing to help.
