I use Mobil 1 20w50 V-Twin Oil, can be found under 9 bucks a quart.
I also use the K/N 171C Oil Filter, ordered from Amazon for between $12 - $15 each.
Greater protection, compare with the dealer prices and you decide.

I concur.
Mobil1 20w50 Vtwin is at WalMart for 8 or 9 bucks. I use Red Line Primary, a bit more spendy at around 15, and Amsoil Severe Gear 75-110 in the trans.
I think it's inadvisable to not use synthetic, but it need not be HD. Temps where I live dictate good ol' 10w40, and I've chosen to use Red Line in all three sumps this time. Fluids and filter (K & N) are in, just waiting for the right weather.
