Hand tight is all you need.

I have never had a filter come loose (or leak) doing a "hand tighten" only.

As you found out a filter is much harder to come off, than it ever was to put on.
No matter how little you tighten it, they always seem like they have torqued down to 10 Ft/Lbs.

Smear a little oil on the 0-ring and snug it down by hand, and you'll be good.
thanks I am gonna loosen it when I get home tonight and just hand tighten it as I did hand tighten it and then put the cup wrench and gave it an extra 1/4 turn

I agree with geting the wrench that fits the indentations of the filter, be advised some ratchets are too tall and you may need a breaker instead. Some like the filters with a nut on the top (k&n style). I know driving holes through a housing works, yet I refrain, rather I used a cheap rubber strap wrench on the filter on my bike when I first bought it.
Shop, or po didn't lube and/or torques it too tight.
A closing note, hand tight plus 1/4 turn may be too much if you are reefing it, then giving a 1/4 more.
I simply tighten with fingers till it makes solid contact, then give it between a 1/4 and 1/3 with my meat hooks.

i've had that wrench slip on the end cap of the filter. i now use this one: http://www.rivcoproducts.com/product...?productid=514

it works much better than the hd one, and it's thin enough that you can get it on the filter by going in next to the oil cooler lines.

^^^this is the problem/solution^^^
always hand tighten only - and about 3/4 to one turn past just touching... don't use a wrench to install a filter...

I'm with Bigltd and Raceface, K&N 171 B or C for touring bike after lubing gasket. I've never had to, but rather than punch a screwdriver through I would pinch with channel locks to remove stuck filter.

K/N 171C (Chrome) or K/N 171B (Black).
17mm/11/16" nut on bottom, with socket and long extension you have it by the gonads.
Amazon Wish List, when the price drops, stock up.
I strap wrenched the original off, decided that BS would cease right there.
Try it, you might like it.

That 1/4 turn with a wrench after hand tightening can sure make your life interesting some times.

I've long heard that the rubber gasket swells a little from the oil, which would make the filter hold on tighter. Don't know if it's actually true or not, but it sounds good and matches the experience we all have with a filter being tighter getting off than it was going on.
