Default damn oil filter

2005 ultra, had a hell of a time getting the oil filter off this weekend , would not budge, I only put it on last time hand tight and a 1/4 turn. but that thing would not come off this time , used a cup adaptor and stripped out the 3*8 drive hole , then put a strap wrench and no way it would move , put a screw diver thru it and just preceeded to tear it up , did this several times with no avail , finally had to remove the voltage regulator and put a chisel to it to finally get it to come loose. never had this happen before , I have had this bike four about five years now , filter was a mobile 1 m1-102, whats up with this?? do I need to antisieze the threads or something???

thanks mike

Ditto. Gasket burns on if not lubed. Easy to forget if you are in a hurry. H-D wrench helps.

I have used the "bang a screwdriver thru it" method since the filter moved to the horizontal position.

First bang 2 drain holes in the end...1 low, 1 high...allow filter to drain.

then bang hole through the side with a long phillips and use that as a lever to turn in off

there is no danger of breaking the cranksensor with this method

Do not use anti seize on the threads.

I bet you forgot to lube the gasket.

A dry gasket will make it seem like the filter is welded on.

I use a set of oil filter pliers, but they require finesse so nothing gets scratched or broken. basically you work the filter loos with them and turn it off the rest of the way by hand.

I do lube the seal , and that is the filter cup that stripped the 3/8 hole out of the middle

Back in the early days of Champion spin on filters for aircraft engines, we had a similar problem using engine oil on the gasket. Champion had us use DC-4 compound, which is a silicone based lube. Also had to be very careful not to over torque the filter. The DC-4 did help.

Do not put any kind of wrench on the filter to tighten.
Hand tight is all you need.

I have never had a filter come loose (or leak) doing a "hand tighten" only.

As you found out a filter is much harder to come off, than it ever was to put on.
No matter how little you tighten it, they always seem like they have torqued down to 10 Ft/Lbs.

Smear a little oil on the 0-ring and snug it down by hand, and you'll be good.

I started using the K&N filters with the nut on the end specifically for that issue. When I got my bike, that bitch seemed welded on too!! Big *** Channel Locks helped take it off. Good luck!!
