I really like my Windvest windshield. I know that you don't want to go over 8", but a short shield of any style will put a lot of wind in your face. I went with a 10" and it juuuusstt barely had some wind hitting my head. Switched out to 12" and I ride in my own little bubble.
I have the Klock Werks 8" Sports Flare on my RG. I love it. Worth every penny. Klock Werks knows windshields. You really can't go wrong with their stuff. If money is the obstacle, I would suggest not going cheap on something that makes the ride so much more comfortable.

Check out Freedom Shields...I put on a 11" for my 15 RGS this weekend and very happy with it...great quality...30% thicker than stock. John is great to deal with and can set you up and help you evaluate what you need. They were running a 10% discount for forum members when I bought mine.
I agree with Roadsterglide on the Freedom Shield. I did my research last year and put on the 10 inch. It's nicely finished, looks great and is strong - John Lauk makes them by hand and is great to deal with.
