I have had Tinnitus for years, water running, cricket,s chirping, yea it will make you crazy.. I wear a 1/2 helmet and wear earbuds with my music.. If I keep my mind busy with listening to music or sounds it seems not to bother me too much.. At night when the house is quiet is the worse for me...
I must be the exception here.... I hate ear plugs ...
I wore them at work for 31 years and the last 19 years I was shooting at least 2x a week and trained with/used explosive charges about 6x a year... I used both the foam plugs, ear muffs and at times both. I've seen the tech in ear plugs progress since 1980...
I've been riding bikes since the mid 1970's... never considered ear plugs until I read a thread like this on one of the bike forums I frequent. I decide to give ear plugs a try..
No doubt they cut down on wind/exhaust noise... but my experience is that they cut down on all sound!
I don't understand the posts that say with the plugs they can still hear traffic and even the radio as good, but the wind noise is cut down. The few times I tried them, they muffled everything... wind, traffic, the radio.
So count me as the one person who won't wear them, they make me feel less aware of my surroundings and less safe...
I have some hearing loss and can't risk additional loss. I had a pair of ear plugs moulded for my ears by a hearing specialist. Not cheap but worth it to me. I can still hear but get no ringing. Good luck what ever your decision.

my ears constantly ring chirp and ding like a car with the seat belt off,I hate quiet because it is almost unbearable.I use to use plugs when on my sportster or zx 12 but since I got the electra glide the windshield helps and I can listen to the radio.
My ears have been ringing constantly for so long its just natural to me, sometimes the ringing even changes pitch.
I always wear ear plugs while riding even when I'm wearing a 3/4 or a full face helmet.
There are pharmacological trials being attempted currently; So there's hope. Herre's an excerpt of a published medical article.
Subjective tinnitus, the phantom ringing or buzzing sensation that occurs in the absence of sound, affects 12–14% of adults; in some cases the tinnitus is so severe or disabling that patients seek medical treatment. However, although the economic and emotional impact of tinnitus is large, there are currently no FDA-approved drugs to treat this condition. Clinical trials are now underway to evaluate the efficacy of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) and dopamine D2 antagonists, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonists and zinc dietary supplements. Previous off-label clinical studies, while not definitive, suggest that patients with severe depression may experience improvement in their tinnitus after treatment with antidepressants such as nortriptyline or sertraline. A small subpopulation of patients with what has been described as “typewriter tinnitus” have been shown to gain significant relief from the anticonvulsant carbamazepine. Preliminary studies with misoprostol, a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analogue, and sulpiride, a dopamine D2 antagonist, have shown promise. Animal behavioral studies suggest that GABA transaminase inhibitors and potassium channel modulators can suppress tinnitus. Additionally, improvements in tinnitus have also been noted in patients taking melatonin for significant sleep disturbances. Like other complex neurological disorders, one drug is unlikely to resolve tinnitus in all patients; therapies targeting specific subgroups are likely to yield the greatest success.
It doesn't take more than a few minutes of ear plug research to see that all earplugs are not the same. They are made to attenuate different frequencies or different volumes. I like the christmas tree looking reusables. They are narrow and block noise according to how much you push them in. On the web there are companies that sell sampler packs, because seems everyone has different noise needs and different inner ears. Tinnitus sucks, I also use a noisy fan to sleep.
