Motorcycles & Trailers.
Back in the 80's my father looked into getting an RV. With the cost of ownership and how much you would actually use it he figured out it would be cheaper to travel in a mercedes and stay at hotels along the way. He bagged the idea of an Rv and upgraded his ride to a Benz!!
Well, it's like the trip we're takin' this June....leavin' Texas whar it'll likely be in the low 80's. Goin' ta Lake George, NY whar we're likely ta encounter 30-40 degree weather. With a trailer, ah kin take gear appropriate for BOTH climates easily, along with the usual "stuff". No tryin' ta tie it onto the bike somewhar - jest a nice, neat pack that goes into the lid-mounted suit bag for easy access when needed. To be sure - there's a lotta times I wished we packed lighter, but there's been more times when ah wuz grateful we had the room ta pack stuff in ta make the trip more enjoyable. Trailerin' ain't fer everyone, for sure.
I really like the idea that guy had. Go to Walmart and buy a cheap tent and sleeping bag and throw it away after the rally. total cost $50,00. Go find that at a motel. At any rate Theres one thing i learned long ago. If your woman sees that trailer SHE WILL FIL IT UP so dont create that problem. LEAVE THE WOMAN. There ,that ends all packing problems. LMFAO
Lemme write this real slow so you kin comprehend it.....it's called T O U R I N G.
It's also called "keep Mama happy". She loves ta ride, but loves ta have her "stuff" along, too. More important to me ta have her happy than not, so to me, not a biggie.So....what's yer average mileage on a trip? We've found that given the variety of terrain we'll cover, just the various jackets can be a challenge ta have along. We've been on the plains @ 100 degrees, an' in blizzards the next day.....
My mileage ? Well it really has to do with the rally or where it's at. I average about 30K a year. Im running out of room on my most perfect SG even with a leather touring package so the thought crossed my mind about a trailer. Once I found a trailer worth looking into i found it cost half what my bike does. GEEEEEESH !
I really dont have issue about something to drink and we don't usually stop but every 165 miles to gas up. Thats usually only 1 Hr 50 min or so so we see no use in a cooler. We like to camp at times but were running out of room fast on the bike. REAL FAST. Got to find a deal on a trailer or mail my crap to the rally LOL
To me a trip STOPS being a trip if it gets below 65 degrees. "to hell with that" Thats why i do my traveling in the summer and down south if i can until summer.

And gee golly........ motorcycles running all times of the day and night at a motorcycle rally......now who would of ever guessed that such a thing would happen????????
Like most folks have said, trailering on tour is what you make of it.
If you want extra room for momma's gazzillion pairs of shoes or a place to store your stuff out of the elements that is a bit more secure than a t-bag strapped to the backrest.
A trailer will do that for you, the cost, well sheeeeeet, why justify the cost of the trailer, you didn't justify the cost of the motorcycle, if we did that, we would all be riding rice.

never mind, sorrrrrry I thought you were pulling the bike on a trailer, moving on
I've also considered seriously a trailer. I am also blown away by the prices of certain mfg's offerings. But, you do get what you pay for. I have to agree with those that think Bushtec makes the best. I've seen their products, followed hundreds of them on the interstates at legal (and well above) speeds, and they are top notch. Not to dis any other mfg's out there, just my opinion. But...They are pricey.
And to take the other side of the packing argument, it's usually me that loads everything that I could possibly need on the bike. Especially if I'm camping...I like my comfort. And I've gotta agree with the necessity to pack different riding clothes. If you're two up, that's two sets of leather, two sets of rain gear, etc. Toss in a few smaller items and you've filled both hardbags. My FLHS doesn't have a TourPack, so I took a Rubbermaid Action Packer and attached it to a piece of plywood than straps onto my luggage rack. Then I start piling things onto that: duffle bag, tent, etc. Having a trailer would eliminate overloading the suspension (like I do), and make it a whole lot easier to set up camp or organize you stuff if you motel it. The down side?Other thaninitial cost (you'll keep it for a long, long time so that's almost irrelevant if you've got the money), you got to have a place to store it around the house, and you need a method to secure it when you're on the road and you disconnect it from the bike to ride(I imagine these can actually 'walk away').
Yeah, for two up extended travel, or camping....I gotta side with the trailer haulers. Just wished I could afford one.
