Default Help starter not engaging!

Well about last October my starter was spinning but not kicking out the gear, just got around to replacing the starter, after I got it all back together it was turning over fine for the first 2 try's, then the same thing happened. Took the derby cover off and it looks like the gear didn't go all the way back in, so I put pressure on the pinion gear and bumped the starter and it went back in, put the derby cover back on, tried to start it, it turned over like 2 times then it happened AGAIN.... What could the problem be? Everything is like brand new!

Is the started staying engaged to the flywheel? If so maybe check battery voltage.

Well in harley terms the pinion gear is staying on the ring gear, then if I try to hit the starter it just winds up it's rpms, doesn't move the pinion gear any

Idk did you check the battery? Might need to load test it.

I know the battery is old and would die if I let it sit for like a week, but it was fully charged yesterday, how could I load test it? Would that cause the gear on the starter to not go all the way back in?

Did you have the bendix shaft apart? On my 2000 Rk when that component was installed backwards (a very small difference in length) then the starter would only spin and not engage. I took this out and reversed it and it has worked fine ever since. I learned my lesson and alway carefully mark the parts for orientation when I remove them. Also if your bendix is supported on the outer primary case make sure its not binding there. (bent)

the "bendix" is the part on the starter that has the small gear on it and engages the gear on the clutch...it is a brand name, I forget the correct name for the gear assy...maybe pinion gear??.it has a ball clutch assy. inside of it that lets it only turn one direction freely, while the starter drives it the other direction..
