Default Garmin 665 Replacement Model?

I just purchased a 2012 Ultra Classic Limited and plan to add integrated GPS to the bike. Looks like the Garmin 665 is a popular model for this addition but is has been around for a while (i.e. 1st Qtr 2010). Before I buy the latest 665 version has anyone heard of a 665 replacement model coming out? If so, I could use an interim solution until the new model is released.

By integrated, do you mean with the NIM module, to give turn by turn interruptions to the radio? If, yes, then you are stuck with the HD RoadTech version of the Garmin. Since HD has gone to the "Infotainment" system, it's very unlikely that a new HD Roadtech model will ever come out.

OH, and, welcome to the forum.

I have a 660 and has been good to me. I do like the 590 for the dual orientation as positioning it vertically allows you to see what is coming up ahead sooner. I have their 3597 for the cage and awesome unit in HD. I wish they would make a HD model for bikes as the quality in clarity is outstanding.

Yes, by integrated I mean I want to mount the 665 to the faring and hear navigation instructions through the comm system either via speakers, headset or both and have any source audio that is playing muted. From other threads I've been reading on using the 665 this way, I may not need the NIM as apparently it only works with the HD version of the 665. Seems others work around has been to run a cable from the 665 to the ADC Aux-In port.

I asked the new model question because almost inevitably as soon as I by an accessory, a new model with more capability comes out.

If you use the cable, you can only listen to music from the GPS. It won't interrupt the radio. You would have the radio set on AUX, and either listen to XM or MP3s stored on the Garmin.

The Zumo 665 upgrade would be the Zumo 590LM. These are the non-HD versions. As shooter mentioned, we may never see an HD version.

I bought the Zumo 590LM for my Road King and was very pleased with it. So much so I now have it mounted on my 2015 FLHTK and use it there.

As others have already commented only the HD version with the NIM installed will interrupt the radio and announce directions. If you plug into the Aux port you will only get audio from the GPS. If you are playing XM or MP3 files from the GPS then you'll hear that and the instructions.

You may want to check out the HD BOMM product. It may be an option to the NIM and give you the GPS prompts on top of the audio. Worth verifying.

I ride with a Sena SMH10 Bluetooth headset in my helmet. The Zumo connects to that fine and I hear the prompts via the headset. I leave the music playing via the bike's speakers.

VA Larry, I have the Sena SMH-10 headset too. Since there is no direct HD 7 pin to SMH-10 cable that I am aware of I thought I would switch to a direct wired J&M headset to the Ultra to use and control Int and CB and listen to the Garmin and XM radio via Aux playback. If there was a cable that would let me send audio out through the SMH-10 mike to the int and CB that would be the Holy Grail I think.
