OOH, any idea where the wires coming right out of the speedometer goes to? Other than the ground, I can splice into it right out of the speedometer, but tracing the others with an ohm meter will be alot easier if i know where the other end is.
wish I could help further, reading the wiring diagram should give you a good indication of what is hooked to what -- and you can look for continuity with those wires
I would spend the $55 on a new sensor and replace it before going to spend $500 on a speedo.... New sensor replaced on mine and works good as new without spending $500.
Try to unplug the spedo then hook up an ohm to ground wire on plug and other side of ohm to ground on battery id there is continuity . If not then chase that wire where it goes . And check both end with ihm again
Ok, i cant find a 2006 wiring diagram, but i belive all three wires from the speed sensor go to the ECM. The ECM recives the speed signal from the speed sensor and the ECM then controls the Speedo thru a serial data communication wire. The ECM is not giving you a Speed sensor code so I dont think the problem on the sensor side of the circuit.
The ECM is giving you a no communication with speedo code, so that means either the speedo is bad or the comm wire between the speedo and ECM is open or the speedo is missing its power or ground.
I would unplug speedo and look at wiring diagram and check for powers (2) and ground, then check continuity of the serial data wire from speedo to ECM, if all checks ok then I would say speedo is fault.
Look at the bright side; you are not adding up miles on the odometer!!! Sorry for that stab at humor. My 01 has gone goofy on me a few times, usually just bouncing and cleaning the speed sensor always took care of my problem. Each time I took it apart it looked like an Afro so wondering why yours is clean?!?!?! Are you certain you are looking at the sensor? Regarding the wiring diagram, I agree, can look like Chinese. Wish I could offer more but best of luck and hope you find your problem.
Found this video and while different platform bike, very similar.
tnich, after thinking about your problem and the fact that you were able to get the code U1097 from the odometer (I am guessing you used the odo reset button to read codes on the odometer) this means that the speedo assy has power and ground or the odometer would not work it also has a serial data connection to the ECM because that is where the U1097 code came from.
I am pretty sure the speedo itself is your problem. Last thought.
Try unplugging the speedo for few minutes and then plug it back in and try it.
This allows the speedo "module" to reset sometimes electronic units get locked up and need to power down to reset. It is a long shot but worth a try before replacing the speedo. This also may fix a poor connection at speedo. Also try knocking and tapping on speedo while riding. See if the needle jumps or starts working. This has work many time for me in my career as a technician.
LAST THOUGHT GO RIDE THE BIKE AND WATCH THE ODOMETER. IF THE ODOMETER CHANGES AS YOU RIDE. 100% SURE THE SPEEDO IS THE PROBLEM
