Unhappy 21 inch brake issues ??

Hi,

i recently installed a nice 21 inch mammoth spoke wheels on my FLHX... but...

i didnt had the 2 new disk that comes with the kit, so i installed the wheels with my originals rotors and pad that were already there...

so when i took off for a ride, i discovered pretty soon that my front brake were making an anoying horn noise when i was pressing the lever.. the more i was pressing, the louder it became... no sound or funny feeling when i wasnt braking...

last week, i received the 2 front disk separately so today, i installed them with some brand new pads as usualy... but the noisy problem still there... WHAT'S THIS NOISE ???

I just put a DNA front wheel with the same rotors as yours (except all chrome) and I used the brake pads the company recommended. The company was KC International http://www.kcint2.com/ and the pads made no noise at all. If you have the aftermarket sintered iron brake pads that may be the problem. The ones I got from KC where not sintered iron.

Also, very important, make sure you use the disc brake quiet lubricant on the back of the pads. Can get it at any auto parts store and spread it all over the metal back of the pads. Its like a grease. Its absolutely necessary you use that or you will have noise for sure.

Is that second pic the same bike? Different color and wheel? Anyway, you could drill out the rear mounts to 3/8 or even 7/16 and rock the fender forward. You will then get the clearance you need without the extension brackets.

LMAO - Two COMPLETELY different and unrelated issues. Not only are they completely different, you described how it did not make the "horn noise" when you were not pressing the brakes.

Default ya

no, no, just 1 big issue: since i raised the front fender, no more rubbing and funny noise when i brake but !!! NOT ENOUGH CLEARANCE for the fender.. so...

the first bump i hitted... BAM ! my fender hitted the crash bar, the lower light bar and the top of the shock bracket... so... its time for a brand new Arlen Ness 21 inch front fender !!!

For those whom are unaware of checking fender clearance with a 21" front wheel on a bagger here is the breakdown.

2000-2013 bikes need to be checked and possibly have to drill out the rear front fender mounting holes to gain enough clearance. 2014 and newer models you need a set of brackets to raise the stock front fender for the 21" wheel.

Tires grow in height at speed and should you not have proper clearance the tire will rub the inside of the fender in turn burning the paint off the top of the fender. The contact usually occurs on the upper rear portion of eh stock front fender.

If you do not want to deal with that get your self a 21" wrap around fender and bolt it on as it is designed with enough clearance for the 120/70/21 tires right out of the box.

Here is a nice 21" with a wrap fender. It really shows off that wheel.

I forgot to address the brake issue. Remove pads, clean pistons, lube the back of the pads and reassemble and see what happens. I run LRB Z Plus pads and have never had that kind of noise out of my brakes.
