Here is a thread I did a few of years ago when my bike was doing the start fine when cold but sounded like hell when hot. I replaced the starter clutch in October 2011 and its been fine since. Now mind you I only have a 96 inch stage one bike.

have replaced two starter clutches. Have added a shim to the SE compensator which gave it a second life. by accident I discovered that all starters are not the same, I mean the same part number starter oem. was headed out on a long weekend trip just as starter clutch 2 went,. no clutch in stock I was given a loaner starter to use and man did it ever crank right through the hot start issue.

I thought I was clear that it was a starter taken off a bike identical to mine that was in the shop because it had crashed. The same oem part#. I am saying that not all are the same off the starter assembly line.
