Default Low voltage

The other night I was on a ride when I noticed the my voltmeter read 10 volts, usually a little over 12 on the meter at higher rpm's. Went home and charged the battery, then had it load tested at Battery's Plus. Tested good. Put it back on the bike and put my digital multimeter on the battery and started it. Ran up the rpm's to 2000 and the meter stayed at about 12.33 volts. Bad stator???? Less than a year old stator. Would like some opinions before I either take to my Indy or read my service manual and attempt replacing it myself. Ant help would be greatly appreciated.

unplug stator where it goes into case. put volt meter on that plug and rev motor and the voltage should go up with rpm volt meter on ac.I think it should be over 18vat 3k rpm,if it does it might be regulator.

Definitely could be regulator. You should see at least 14v DC from regulator. Like previous post unplug the stator from the regulator and check with a meter on AC volts. Should see 18-20 vac per 1000 rpm. There it's a good stickie in the electrical forum that walks you through checking your charging system.

Usually when the measured readout is lower than spec range it is usually the stator.
When it is higher, it's usually the regulator.
You may also have loose wiring.

Yeah, from what I understand the voltage not running up on higher rpm is a bad stator. I looked on you tube and seems to be not a horrible job to do in the garage.

Was just looking on ebay and found a 45 amp stator and rotor kit for my 99 FI ultra that will work with oem voltage regulator. Anyone see a problem with this upgrade?

Check the wiring coming from the voltage regulator. Check the plug at the stator, they are known to corrode. A guy I rode with last weekend had a wire coming from the regulator to the battery break on him. Bike wouldn't charge. Stator and regulator were both good. He thinks it may have gotten pinched when he had it on the jack over winter.

Before you spend a penny go to the Tech Electrical section where you will find a couple of Stickies to help you diagnose the problem. They should help you isolate the culprit.

Many thanks for the inputs, guys! Hopefully tonight I will get a chance to do a final diagnosis. If it is the stator, has anyone replaced one on an Ultra? If so, any surprises in store for me, or any tricks to make it easier?
