My motor pukes a lot of crankcase oil, partly because it runs w/ high oil pressure after engine mods. I've been through too many AC covers but keep going back to a naked filter, because I like the cool intake air, and the look. I have a chrome SE backplate. All the while I've been wishing I was not introducing oil into the intake and thus mucking up the combustion chamber. I've done the usual tricks, like lowering oil level to the middle of the stick. If I use an AC cover that wraps the filter, like the football, S&S Airstream, or Cobra Powerflow, the splooge stays in the AC cover and off my saddlebag, but I want the naked setup. Also, football and S&S pull hot air off motor.
Has anyone rigged an external crankcase oil recovery system for the HD SE backplate that uses a canister? If so, please share pics and tell us about it. I'm thinking I can strategically drill and tap the backplate then rig up the drain. I want a canister because I don't want the splooge dumping on my wheel, bike, or the planet.
Run a line in between the heads, down between the cases where the shifter shaft is and terminate it about 1 1/2 to 2" above ground level and it will not blow back onto anything. Best thing I could have done and it was cheap to do and almost invisible.....
Hey Jefla, I also have cams and run higher oil pressure from an installed axtell oil bypass. It runs at 48psi when cruising and about 16 at idle. I have run a small canister that I hide behind the down tube brace right by oil cooler lines because I don't want the oil back in my combustion chamber. I can run for weeks and don't get anything like what you explained above as far as blow-by. Is that normal for that S&S engine?
I found some crankcase breather bolts that I connected to the stainless tubing and Teed them together under a/c and out to canister. I found the overflow canister on the internet, I think it was designed for a go-cart and a filter at any auto parts store. I wanted something small that I could hide. I did some quick fab work on the backing plate and it has been working good for me for well over a year.
I installed DK Customs external breathers on the wife's and my bikes. I found that without the vacuum pressure in the intake they put out little to no oil. The wife's breather filter is still oil less and my has only gotten a slight film on it after running it hard against a good head wind.
I can run for weeks and don't get anything like what you explained above as far as blow-by. Is that normal for that S&S engine?
Thanks for the pics. My bike puked oil before the S&S build (which is only a BB kit and cams; heads are next), so what I'm seeing is not "normal" for S&S. Also, although the build included a Precision Ground bypass valve and Baisley spring, which accounts for the higher pressure, the motor pukes a bit less post-build. I had leak-down tests run and got good results, so I may simply have a messy motor. Or, maybe I really need to enlarge the oil passages in the heads (or finally upgrade to the S&S heads).

I've wondered about this. Do non-pressurized external systems leave too much oil mist in the motor? Alternatively, are pressurized systems connected to intakes pulling more oil mist out of the motor than is necessary? I'd really like to get the mess out of my motor and off my saddlebag, but if all that splooge needs to be sucked out then I'll deal with the mess and run an S&S Airstream cover on trips.
Its not the head passeges that need enlarging. Its the rocker arm supports. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on S&S heads to slow down pcv issues. Maybe your umbrella valves need replacing.
