My '08 FLHT did that a couple times, with days and weeks between episodes. Ended up being advance notice from the regulator that it was about to quit. Replaced 12000 miles ago, no more problems.
......yeah, it happend again this afternoon while commuting home. charging went down to around 11, check engine light came on along with the battery light. rode it for twenty miles and about 5 miles from home it corrected it self. i tried to recreate the incident but was unable to so. So, looks like something is going. question is, those of you that replaced the stator and regulator, how hard is it and about what did it cost? i got a shock when i found a high output charging system at $489 but that might be more than i need....but i do run heated gear in the winter along with a heated seat. i saw others from JP Cycle for about $150 or so. i run LED headlights so that draw shouldn't be too bad. If i can nurse it a couple of more days till i hit 35000 it would be nice. I'm at 33900 now. gotta see if its covered by my extended warranty i got from Kutter.
thanks guys. i have an appointment friday at the stealer. it should be covered under my extended warranty. i'll look up the diagnostics for it and see if i can run it down. i tried to charge the battery yesterday and the tender got hot after leaving it overnight. it showed still charging. was using the pigtail so i'm confused why it wouldn't take a charge.
What the OP describes is exactly what the voltage regulator does when it's failing. Had it happen twice, symptoms were identical both times....finally got a VR that's lasted. Very well could be the stater, but my money is on the VR.
thanks for the info gipper. everyone has some good ideas. I'm charging the battery on a regular charger directly to the battery. still couldn't get the tender to work. hopefully, the battery will take a charge so i can do the 22 mile run to the dealers on Friday morning. i shut off everything today except the cruise control and it took quite awhile to get down to 11 volts and the idiot lights to come on.
