As mentioned, find a happy medium where you can put your heel on the floorboards and your toes on the pegs, then you can also move your whole foot onto the pegs. Gives you three different positions to move back and forth to on those long rides.

You said it better than I did. Also, the heel rest arm can be used.

Here's a pic of a good Highway Peg with Heel Rest that can be adjusted a multitude of ways, including close to the floorboard...just use the toe on the heel rest, or put the entire foot on the highway peg. Can't beat it for comfort.
I just installed these last weekend. They make a "short" and a "long" version. I went with the "long" version. Brings the peg closer to my feet. Also went with the stock rubber pegs. They have a ridge at the edge to keep your feet from slipping off. Good luck!
