I know this has probably been discussed a lot, but Im asking anyways
I have a 2015 SGS
If I change the pipes and headers....Is it required I change the A/C and add some sort of fuel module? I keep getting different answers and want to know before buying the pipes.
Ur getting different answers because there is no straight answer.. When u go to put socks on which one goes on the left and which is on the right, doesn't really matter.. Most say if u change just exhaust or just header that u don't need a tuning device.. Some say you do.. You definitely need one if u want to get the full potential out of ur mods
Every new bike runs lean to meet epa mandates. If you are content with a hot running bike with so so performance , then go ride. If you want to maximize performance and enjoyment, get it tuned.do you want to dine at McDonald's or Peter Luger's?
what decency said , you probably can get by without a tuner if you just add pipes, but other than sound you won't gain much if anything either. The bike comes set real lean from the factory as is and just pipes could lean it out even more and Could cause some issues, but probably nothing too bad. That being said adding a tuner/tune to even stock bikes will make it run better and cooler, noticeably so. depending on budget I would put some type of tuner or at least xieds on it , and get the best tuner the budget allows even if you don't plan on more upgrades cause if you change your mind later your not upgrading the tuner too. I honestly would get the tune tuner first and then do any upgrades like pipes a/c etc as budget allowed, I put a powervision on a stock 14 cvo and was shocked at the difference in the way the bike runs. If your just upgrading the pipes for the sound, xieds or even the harley download may be worth your time. just my opinion
I appreciate the input. I am looking into a tuner. Can i use the stock A/C?
Why would you want to do that, let it breath and get a really nice performance gain. You'd be buying a tuner for very little gain. Give it air and you can give it more fuel .......................
Please also consider the following items when changing your pipes/mufflers:
- Your fuel mixture has been leaned out by MOCO to meet EPA regulation. Thus, it's already running hotter.
- If you're replacing just the mufflers, you may be able to get away with just getting a new A/C and not adjust the fuel mixture. But, you engine will run a bit hotter than stock.
- If you're replacing both the header pipes and mufflers, it's a good idea to change your A/C and get some kind of a module to rich up your fuel mixture. Your engine will run much hotter without richen up your F/M. This could lead to excessive heat on your pistons and rings, and will likely cause some pinging. Adjusting the fuel mixture will do a couple of things: your engine will run cooler and prolong the engine life; your engine oil won't turn to water due to a super hot engine; your thighs and legs will thank you for not burning them and less engine pings.
