Default Question about pipes and a tuner?

Looking at getting 2011 Deluxe, read somewhere on here that on the 2010-11's you could change pipes and intake without a tuner and the ecm would adjust. Any truth to this? or do I still need a tuner? Also could I get by with pipes alone? Thanks n advance.

you can get away w/out a tune changing the pipes, but if you change the intake I'd be doing a tune.

The ECM on the '11 will still adjust to a stage 1 intake, but it will adjust to the lean EPA friendly factory condition. Personally, even on a stock bike, I'd still fatten up the air/fuel mix. You're not going to hurt your bike leaving it as it is, but it'll be a little harder for it in the long run.

Whoa ... before you open the barn door and let the horses out ... consider this ... HD went to a CAN Bus system for the softails in 2011 ... so ... IF you need an aftermarket non-HD ECU ... will the ones out there on the market work on a CAN Bus equipped bike? Second ... IF ... you take out your stock pipes and replace them with aftermarket slip-ons ... you will most likely end up with out cats ... which are in the stock pipes .. or at least they were in 2010. And ... IF you baffles larger than 1.50 ... and mostly people on this forum do ... me included ... you will need some fuel/ignition control or the thing will run leaner that it is already. The factory ECM won't adjust.

Having gone the aftermarket route ... whatever you do ... do the research ... and see if HD MOCO can supply you with THEIR aftermarket ECM, e.g., SERT ... and see if Mastertune software is available for 2011 softails. HD MOCO is trying their damnest to freeze out nonHD MOCO aftermarket suppliers of ECMs and just about any other modding gear ... so you have to go to them or not at all.
