hello all, I have an 05 electra glide classic. while riding this weekend I developed an exhaust leak that got louder and much louder as I rode. once I got home I discovered the crossover or y pipe that comes off the rear jug was very badly cracked. any idea what may have caused this? just age? weak motor mounts that allowed to much twist under tork? any info is greatly appreciated.
Curious as to why it happens? My friends '07 with only 16k on it did the same thing. We just noticed it on the ride this past weekend. Is it due to motor mounts, or just the engine vibration on a Harley? I told him it was a good excuse to get a true 2 into 2 exhaust system installed. :-)

Its not the most reliable design, over time, as you ride, the frame flexes putting stress on the joint. Riding habits can affect when or whether it happens, if you take short trips there will be moisture in the pipes, which can accelerate the process.
Pretty common actually, had to weld mine up on my old 2001 RK. Buddies 2007 had same issue as well. Was in Cody,Wy. when mine cracked, got lucky and the private shop there was able to get to it and weld the crack good enough to finish the trip...
My 03 cracked around 19K. Since then I replace the rubber muffler mount yearly before it dries up and stops the travel needed and puts a strain on the weld.Sometimes twice a year if the right side starts to chirp.
