Checked mine and it was loose so tightened it up first had to loosen just a bit. Had to put one foot pipe on Allen wrench to get it to move. Probly should do liked mentioned with the new bolts. A friends came loose on the road and had to drive to dealer with only 5th gear, they replaced bolt.
I believe the shaft just slides out ? I found this on Ebay after mine fell apart on Penn Turnpike !! used new allen cap, blue locktite and it hasnt loosened up again
Op....go back to my original thread response. Just go get a 3/8 socket that has that size Allen in it already and go in there with an extension and a ratchet and give it a good tightening. Wammo your done. It will be tight.
No need to start thinking your shaft needs replacement. If I recall correctly I did go to Harley and got a brand new bolt, lock tighted it with the medium blue stuff, dropped it in and tightened it down real good using the tq leverage provided by the 3/8 ratchet set up.
I usually follow service manual tq specs but in this case and in the case of tightening riser clamps I go rouge. My shifter has remained tight since then with well over 20,000 miles since I tightened it with the method above. Maybe 15 minutes from taking the old bolt out to replacing it and tightening it.
Do any of you guys have any play in the shaft that the lever goes onto that goes into the transmission. I was having the same problem and installed a new grade 8 bolt and tightened it down and now the lever is tight on the shaft, but the shaft actually seems to have some back and fourth play and also it is weeping a bit of tranny oil. Nothing much though at all. just wondering if its normal of if I should be pulling the primary off this winter to replace the seal and if the seal will even stay good since there is some movement. Thoughts?
You can replace the shifter shaft seal but if the shaft bushing is worn it won't be long before that seal starts leaking again.
On the subject, I had the inner primary off my '94 and decided to change my shift shaft seal while I was in there. The lever was tight but it looked like this when I removed it.....
The shifter rod coming out of the transmission does move back and forth ever so slightly. make sure the shifter is tight on the rod and you should be good to go.
