Thanks folks - I bought the bike new. I beleive I did add some air a year or so ago (old age - memory is gonzo!), and might have used a compressor. I will try with a bike pump and see if it holds. 35 lbs seems like alot more than I remember. I will try 35 lbs.
Firstly , welcome to the forum.
Secondly , get a harley touring air pump.
Thirdly , get the factory service manual.
The pump is not expensive and it's the easiest way to tune the shocks that you'll find.
The hose has a "lossless" design and won't affect pressure when removed.
You will lose 2-3 lbs every time you check it with a gauge , so bear that in mind.
I'm about 175 lbs and run 0-10 lbs usually, more often 10.
My wife is about 150 lbs and I ran 25 lbs with her on board last year , and thought I liked it.
I tried 30 lbs the other day and the bike handles alot better with her on back , especially in turns.
She said the ride was ok so that's it for me.
You may want to try starting at 35 lbs two up and just see how it feels to you.
35 lbs is max for my bike , maybe for yours also.
Once tuned , they work pretty well for stock stuff.

5K on the Harley....but another 2K on the dirtbike, 1k on the boat and 50K to the bar!
If I thought I'd live this long, I would've taken more care of the bod! 50 yrs young
Thanks for the advice - looks like a great forum
(ps - I got the wife a 02 sportster for her 50th last month, only complaint with the carb model is it burps/farts once in a while....albeit it hasnt been above 50 degrees here in the NE yet. Any advice? Jetting?...thanks again)
If you have an 04 and bought it used... the previous owner may have already blown the shocks, for the reason the others stated, by using a compressor. May have to replace, and then make sure you have the hand pump...
If you used an air compressor you might have blown the seals out because it doesn't take much to overdo it. Try using the HD handheld air pump to see if it holds air. If it holds air, start out with 12 lbsand add air in 2 lb increments until you are getting a good ride. You will probably find that when you ride 2-up you add a few extra lbs.
