Default 1000 mile service

What is the opinions on having the dealer perform the 1000 mile service. First dealer wants 225 to do service with standard oil. More importantly he is running two weeks behind and he can get me in the day after my vacation. Already got 500 on it so it probably will not make it past the weekend. My timing needs some help.

First, contact your dealer and see if they have the manual for your bike. If they do, go get it! Then, give some thought do doing your own service. There are terrific resources right here on the HDForum. You'll get an idea of what tools you'll want to have around as well as how to used them. Good luck and let us know how you make out. I'll bet Ol' Bill Norse might even ride over and help you change the oil, right Bill? How close is NM to Il anyway....?

The 1000 mile service is the most critical service for your bike, When your bike is brand new it still may have some metal shavings in the engine which are all being flushed out by the oil, Thats why it is important to get the oil changed a.s.a.p. Also this is the time the dealer goes through the bike bolt by bolt and check to make sure everything is still tight and the way it should be. Not to mention they change all the other fluids also. In my opinion you should have the dealer do it because this way there is no way they can put you at blame if you should have something go wrong with the bike. I know its a big chunk of $$$ but its worth the money. If you never take your bike to a shop again, do it at least for the 1000 mile service. just my opinion.

I have mine coming for free but I bought my bike out of town so I couldn't get back there in time. I did the oil and tranny myself. $ quarts for oil and 1 for tranny. They said the primary would be fine till I got there. I did non synthetic for the motor and the new synthetic for the tranny. Once I hit 5000 miles I will go to synthetic for the motor. The motor and tranny are a piece of cake. Do it yourself.

Do it yourself. it is cake. Took all of about 30 minutes to change all 3 fluids out the first time for me. And I am no wrench!

Mine is coming up too,for first service and Dealer is way backed up. I changed my motor
oil at 500 miles, and will change all fluids myself at 1000 miles if I have to.
Bike will go to dealer when he can get it in,was told first service was the most important,
and if not performed by dealer, could impact future warranty issues. Dealer was probaly
blowing smoke up my butt when he told me that, can't say for sure.

Noticed some oil on the garage floor right behind the primary case and appears inside with a little drip down the frame by the cross member. Maybe it's gonna change itself. This ain't good

I took mine to the dealer for the first 1000 mile service. Everything else I do, is in my garage. I just wanted the warm and fuzzy that they had their head on straight. They changed me over to synthetic in all three and it's good to go.

Buy the service manual and then you can't go wrong.
