I got 20K from the OEM Dunlops. I got 20K out of the Dunlop Elites. The current Mich Comm II's have 16K on them and will easily get another 5K or more. The roads in AZ must a lot better than other states. I think some people tend to run the air pressure too low. Always at 40/40 for me.
IAM NOW AT 7,500 MILES ON MICH C2's and now ride up 2 up & bags loaded 80-85% of the time & the front tire still looks like almost new and rear tire shows very little wear with a lot of meat / deep tread depth still left in it too.
Stock dunlops that came on the bike when i bought it with 9,700 miles on it 11/2014 were basically shot,bike was from TX so nice & hot on the tires.
Rear would not pass insp anymore and through front would pass insp it only had 8-1k legal miles lfet it and it was cupped bad & howled like heck too being annoying as heck which is when i installed new C2's.
But comparing tire mileage is just about useless because there are very different riding surfaces all over the country that greatly affect tire wear not to mention temps / heat diff along with difference in rider weight,riding 2 up or not,riding style being maybe aggressive (or not) on the throttle and in corners too along with maybe having a modded motor putting out more trq/pwr to rear tire that can also affect / reduce tire wear too.
Just to many variables for tire comparison from bike to bike person to person.
But if the same person was to test diff tries on the same bike in same riding cond with same riding style that would be a much better tire vs tire comparison in a better controlled test environment with same bike,same rider,same roads ,temp, cond etc.
What i can say is from what the stock dunlops looked like at 9,700 miles compared to what the C2's @ 7,500 miles look like its completely a day and night difference with the dunlops basically shot ,cupped & howling @ 9,700miles and c2's showing they that have many more miles to go left in them @ 7,500miles with a lot of tread depth still showing in them and still relatively smooth & quiet too thanks to the ride-on i installed in the C2/s.
I think i should get at least 18-20k out of rear C2 & maybe even 22k+ miles out of the front C2 that cost a total of $329 to my door & had local dealer install them saving me $100's on the tires themselves.
Just replaced the stock Dunlops last weekend with a little over 12,000 miles on them. The front looked pretty good, but the rear was worn pretty good. Put Michelin Commander II's.
I've been running Dunlop stockers for years and usually get about 12-15K on them. I'm getting down to a few 32nds right now, but should be enough to get me through this season. I'll change out over the winter and thinking about going to the Elites.
I put a set of American Elite2's on my 2007 Ultra last fall. I don't race around but don't baby it all the time. a lot of 2 up riding. air pressure kept at 40lbs. I did Sturgis this year and noticed that while riding in Wyoming and Montana the road surfaces seemed rougher. I got 10,190 miles on the rear and just replaced with another American Elite but I noticed they dropped the 2 from the name.
Here are pictures of the Old Tire and Old and New together. I guess after seeing all the higher miles listed i was hoping to get at least 14 to 15K oh well I do like the ride. Maybe try Mechlin Commander 2's next time.
a lot of the higher mileages you see posted are for post 2010 bikes. dunlop introduced the multi tread compound tires in 2010, and thats why we're getting better mileage. sorry to say, your 07 does not have the multi tread available to you. but on a good note, you can go with the elite 3s on your 07. i got almost 20k on mine when i traded the bike in and still had a lot of tread left. i would not hesitate to put either elite 3s or american elites on my bike. unfortunately, my size tires are not available in the aftermarket yet.
I got about 9000 miles on my stock dunlops on my 2012 Softail Slim. By 9000, wires where showing. With my Metzler 880 Ultra Marathons, I was at about 19,000 miles, still had tread life to last me awhile, but I got a nail and had to replace them. I am now on my Michelin Commander 2, and I haven't had them long enough to give you a distance for them.
I got 20,500 out of my stock 14 limited tires, but the howling in curves, and the follow every crack in the road made me switch, now running Michelin C 2's, so far much better handling, no noise with about 2,000 mi on them
So I recently swapped out the old Dunlop on my bike (rear). I put a Metzeler 880 on the front when I went to a 21". I planned to match the rear with the same tire but against my better judgment I let the local shop sell me Shinko 777. I know a lot of dyna guys who swear by these things. Theyre sticky, and cheap.
My problem is I now have a high speed wobble that starts around 90 and gets worse at 100. I could open it up to 120 with the stock Dunlop/Metz set up no prob. I think the front and rear tires are tracking different due to different tread patters. ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS? I think the sidewall/ carcass is just softer and weaker too but these dudes swear different.
Final question: Anyone run a 180/70/16 in the rear on a SG/RG? The 880 comes in this size, otherwise Ill go with the 888 in a 180/65. Thanks
