Default Grinding noise on hot start

Folks - a friend of mine has a 2010 Ultra. Often - but not always - when he tries to start the bike when its hot, there's a grinding noise and he has to make a 2nd attempt to start, which usually works.

I'm thinking starter and/or starter clutch.

Agree? Disagree? TIA for any help on this...

I thought about the compensator. So - how do you know which part is causing the problem?

at 2010 the battery is 5 years old, might be worth doing a load test. Could be a cheap way to rule electrics out first.

For me, after I went thru and checked/cleaned battery/starter connections, I did some searching on here.......saw that 09's were notorious for failed comps....figured I'd change that first along with the tensioner......fixed me so I stopped there....lol....

These guys have already hit on all 3 of the possible culprits. Weak battery, starter clutch and compensator.

Ok, so I suppose the battery is easy enough to check and/or replace (tho I have my doubts that this is the problem, if for no other reason than that its the least expensive.)

After the battery is replaced, how do you decide what to replace. Personally the starter clutch seems to make the most sense.

I will say, however, that is bike does hesitate when he starts it - turns once, quick pause, then rolls over and starts. Is this a battery issue or a starter clutch issue?

Default Me too on my '09

I have the same issue. I have gone days without it reoccurring but I know failure is in the the future. It happens more when the engine is really hot and ambient temps are high, 80's to 90°+. Based on all I have learned if you are going to do the starter clutch by all means replace the comp while you are at it or you will be revisiting this issue and it may wreck your replacement starter clutch. BTW - I still have the original battery, it always been on a maintainer that can deliver / monitor a float charge. As for batteries...My '07 XL has the original battery that has been on the juice since delivered, got about 28,000 on that Roadster. I've checked connections and they are clean and tight. Once glassmat batteries became common the life of my batteries has been 8 to 10 years when treated properly.
