After the battery is replaced, how do you decide what to replace. Personally the starter clutch seems to make the most sense.

I will say, however, that is bike does hesitate when he starts it - turns once, quick pause, then rolls over and starts. Is this a battery issue or a starter clutch issue?

Grinding noise is starter clutch and starter hesitating turning motor over slow or stopping then rolls over & finally starts on hot refire is generally an issue with a weak battery & or somewhat tired starter .

Or collectively together it could be an issues with both a weak battery and somewhat tired worn starter collectively together causing weak hot refire.

If it were my bike if its still got it's original almost 6yr old battery id go for a new higher CCA output battery 1st to see if it refires better hot.

If it refires hot better with new battery then i'd next replace starter clutch to stop griding at times .

But if after getting new battery it doesnt start any better hot then that shows the starter itself is likely getting tired along with the starter clutch being bad at the same time in which case id got for a new starter.

Earlier this yr i bought a new hi output / hi trq starter off ebay for my 09 TC-96" for approx $225 vs lower output stock HD starter that i think was approx $450 at the time.

Its been almost 8k miles with the new starter and all is good thus far.

Here's a link to the same type starter i bought for my 09 tc-96".

An update on this - a new battery seems to have solved the problem, however, he's also pretty close to a deal to trade it in for a new bike.

Thanks for the update & glad to hear it was a simple battery fix.

Maybe I'm just lucky but I have 119k on my wg and everything on the primary side is original except the stator and some seals, oh, and one primary shoe My 03 egc is at 35k and when I go there for some reason, I'll look things over. I did put in a new batt. And about 1/2 - 3/4 second on the starter is all it takes, cold or hot. Are these compensator problems just on the newer bikes?

2008 ultra and been having this problem recently...I'm trying to understand how the compensator even makes that grinding noise. On mine, the sounds is as if the solenoid is not fully extending and the starter pinion gear is just spinning against the clutch basket start gear. The motor is not turning over at all and the grind is ugly. If the gears had engaged, I'd at least get the motor to turn over...unless the compensator is slipping...is that the noise I am hearing?

Upon opening the primary, the gears show no obvious damage or wear and the drain plug magnet had just a little very fine fuzz on it.

The problem developed shortly after installing true duals which routes the rear exhaust very close to the starter. One "expert" told me that this was getting the starter hotter than normal and causing the solenoid to stick only when hot. Not sure I buy that.

It is impossible for compensator to slip. Heat could be a problem if you hit the starter and the motor truly is not turning over. I would take a look at the contacts in your solenoid. That plunger should be free. Before I spun a lot of wheels, I would put a battery in it if there is not a lot of miles on the starter, however. Some people have the bad habit of hitting the starter 3 or 4 times getting off it before the motor is running. This put's 4 times the normal mileage would on the solenoid contact.

If the compensator is weak, it retards the starters ability to engage properly and then grinds, worse when it's hot. Mine has been doing it ... compression releases help and a new compensator, my starter has 90000 miles on it, it was ok from when they put a SE compensator at 70000 miles but now it's weak again, I am about ready to out a Baker unit and activate my Auto compression releases.

How, you think it winds up a little further then if it was strong and starter cannot keep up and falls out? That is not what holds the starter in, it's the electric magnet of the solenoid. Do you do your own work or a mechanic?
