Grinding noise on hot start
After the battery is replaced, how do you decide what to replace. Personally the starter clutch seems to make the most sense.
I will say, however, that is bike does hesitate when he starts it - turns once, quick pause, then rolls over and starts. Is this a battery issue or a starter clutch issue?

Grinding noise is starter clutch and starter hesitating turning motor over slow or stopping then rolls over & finally starts on hot refire is generally an issue with a weak battery & or somewhat tired starter .
Or collectively together it could be an issues with both a weak battery and somewhat tired worn starter collectively together causing weak hot refire.
If it were my bike if its still got it's original almost 6yr old battery id go for a new higher CCA output battery 1st to see if it refires better hot.
If it refires hot better with new battery then i'd next replace starter clutch to stop griding at times .
But if after getting new battery it doesnt start any better hot then that shows the starter itself is likely getting tired along with the starter clutch being bad at the same time in which case id got for a new starter.
Earlier this yr i bought a new hi output / hi trq starter off ebay for my 09 TC-96" for approx $225 vs lower output stock HD starter that i think was approx $450 at the time.
Its been almost 8k miles with the new starter and all is good thus far.
Here's a link to the same type starter i bought for my 09 tc-96".

Thanks for the update & glad to hear it was a simple battery fix.

If his bike still has the original compensator, it's going to need to be replaced regardless.
Upon opening the primary, the gears show no obvious damage or wear and the drain plug magnet had just a little very fine fuzz on it.
The problem developed shortly after installing true duals which routes the rear exhaust very close to the starter. One "expert" told me that this was getting the starter hotter than normal and causing the solenoid to stick only when hot. Not sure I buy that.
