My 2008 Ultra always starts up very nicely when cold. But if I return from a ride
and get back to the bike in a few minutes, while the bike still hot, the starter
makes a horrible noise as if the whole bike is falling apart and then starts. what is going on?
First off what size motor?
And if its a grinding noise it might be starter drive or drive on back side of clutch and thats what make it sound like its coming part drive is weak and doesnt engage fully and grinds on teeth.
If it is making noise as if its week and you have big motor it could be compression when gets warm so what size motor and how long have you had bike?
If you have had bike threw heat of last year and it did not do it i would think that starter drive is getting weak!Thats if its a grinding noise if its another type noise try to explain noise..The starter is a pretty easy fix if you have the tools and table i would say it would cost you an hour labor plus starter! If its the teeth on back side of clutch basket its going to be around three hours and what they charge you for parts!!!
it also could be as simple as bat is weak to and not throwing enough juice to starter to engage all the way!you can put a meter on it and see how much it pulls it down when you hit the starter!! Just some ideas!!
07 and up starters come right out in 30 minutes from your front door no outer primary removal. 45 minutes to clean up dissasemble and replace clutch. 30 minutes to put back in. $75 to $100 for ALL ***** clutch.
+1 on checking the batt. Mine was doing the same last summer, took it to dealer and had them check voltage, sure enough batt. was a little weak, no noise or starting issues after new one was put in.
Mine did the same thing until I replaced the compensator with the screamin eagle compensator now it starts great everytime hot or cold at 26,000 the original compensator was worn and pitted pretty bad
