Default 2014+ or 2013- street glide

After our long trip to Sturgis and Colorado this summer we are considering upgrading to a newer bike. I'm a bit undecided on what year I want though. I'm thinking a 14 or newer but I'm having some people tell me to go 13 or older. The looks aren't that big of an issue to me. I like the old bags but the new ones have grown on me. I'm not real sure I like the computer screen on the new onea but I think I'd get used to it. I guess my biggest hangup is I have a friend with a 13. He changes parts like he changes underwear, I'm assuming. When he had a road king that meant I got my road king slightly used parts for half the price. Also because he tears his down and rebuilds it so much he could answer most any question I had with mine. I guess my question now is how different is the 14 to the 13. I've been told the engine is basically the same with a different cam. Is this true? So would a cam out a 13 fit in a 14?

the biggest diff you would see is the fairing and the stuff in it.

the twin cooled models use a different cam- maybe that is related to what you heard- and they make a little better power- but not all models are twin cooled.


I don;t know which year RK you have, if you like it get a fairing kit for under $500.

the SG has 12" rear shocks are you at 13" on the RK?

If so, I bet you used that extra 30% suspension travel on your trip esp if 2 up.


IF you are at a point where you don;t think your bike is reliable to do another trip next summer...then do think about a newer machine.

remember that a used machine can be buying someone else's problems- so shop carefully.

I'm impressed with the new heavier front end and better low end torque of the Rushmores. They handle much better. I even enjoy the one hand latches but that's not a biggie!

Thanks for the input. We have considered buying a fairing for the road king but that's not really the only thing I want. My bike is an 06 and it's been great. It's a turd, but great. All my friends have 95 kits up to 113s I'm an avid bar hopper and a couple times a year we ride to Eureka Springs Arkansas from the KC area. It was a big step up from a GSXR and a Honda Fury. We're starting to want to do longer rides though. What I'm looking for now is not only the fairing but cruise control, more power, a stereo I can here at 80, bigger tank, more power, wider back tire, the new frame, more power... the 88 just ain't cutting it. Haha I know I can do most of these things to my RK, but I feel like I'm just at a good point to sell. Looking at Craigslist people are asking more than what I paid for my bike with the same miles, and I've put 19000 on it. I got a pretty sweet deal from a motivated seller. As far as the shocks mine is lowered in the back so I've lost that travel anyway. So I see your point, and it's still an option, I'm just leaning towards a newer bike. If it happens it will be tough to sell the RK. She's been good to me

A guy I work with said the same thing about the front end. He's one of the few trying to talk me in to a 14+

I have a 13 Streetglide and took a test ride on a 14, 15 nothing to me except the gauges and screen were any different. Nothing that made me think "WOW" what a difference. Recently went to Harley to look at the 16's same bike just a different year. IMO

I recently traded in my 07 road king for a 2014 street glide. I let the sales man talk me into the fancy new fairing design. I can hardly tell any difference between mine and a buddy's 2012 whether the vent is open or closed. But one advantage to a new bike is that for some reason the dealer seems to have lots of wiggle room on the price and trade in, including tax and License. It took a few visits to the dealer to get the price out the door where I wanted it but it was worth it.

twin cooling is a huge improvement imo. the stereo sounds really good on the rushmores compared to the 13 and the saddlebag latches and the new fairing greatly reduces buffeting and feels more stable in crosswinds and the passenger backrest is improved and the stiffer front end feels more stable………..

After having owned an '09 Ultra for the last 3 years and an '07 RK for four years prior to that. And now a '15 Ultra Limited for the last two weeks.............The '15 puts the last two bikes to shame in every aspect.

The '15 handels better, rides better, the stereo is better right outta the box, makes better power, cooler on me and my wife. I have yet to find anything I don't like about it.

I've owned both. Get the 14+. The vent in the fairing does work and I like the GPS. The linked braking is nice also.
