Hi all. I have an 05 ultra probably going to put new primary chain in this off season. It has about 37000 on it. My questions are hydraulic adjuster or spring type. Second what about eliminating the compensator with the gear and spacer kit or should I just get a new comp? Any advice appreciated
Not really sure how bad it's worn but I am the type of person that figures if I am going in there I might as well change it. As for the comp not sure if it is shot or needs new spring. As I let off of it when the rpms drop down to about 2000 I feel a little surge is the only way to describe it. It has been doing this for quiet some time. It's almost like a back shift on a snowmobile clutch I guess
Primary on those bikes is not weak unless you got a bad one all the issues regarding compensator didn't exist vastly until 07 improvements or whatever they call them.
Harley says to replace chain when the adjuster runs out of room. I would think you have the manual adjuster with a long inspection cover in the middle of primary. I doubt you will find hardly any wear. Mine has 40K and still looks new. No hook in sprocket. There is a little wear since mine has some variation in loose and tight as you rotate it and I set the tight to the minimal play and live with the little over in the loose. You also have the older compensator design that has the extra deep case hardening that holds up and rarely gauls

I have 119k on one of my Harley's and, other than a new stator, and one new tensioner shoe, and a couple seals, it's all original and still looks fine when in there a few weeks back, for the stator.. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
